ingersoll rand 30 gallon air compressor
An air compressor is a tool that takes power, usually from an electric motor, diesel engine, or gasoline engine, and transforms it into pressurized potential energy. It does this by progressively pumping and compressing air into a storage vessel, intensifying the pressure until the capacity is met. When that upper level is surpassed, the compressor automatically switches off. Afterwards, the compressed air may be kept contained in the tank for an extended period - sometimes for months or even years - and only employed when necessary.

In the early 1800s, air compressors were invented as a means to power various pneumatic tools, from rock drills to paint sprayers. This all changed in 1849, when Goldwin and John R. Hannay revealed a novel invention of their own. Their reciprocating piston compressor looked akin to the compressors we use today and was operated with a hand crank. This yielded pressures of up to 60 pounds per square inch (psi).

In 1874, a revolution in power delivery was delivered in the form of George Westinghouse's invention: the first rotary air compressor. Far lighter and more compact than its predecessor - the reciprocating piston variety - it could be powered by a gasoline engine, setting the foundation for its use in powering the infrastructure's first air brakes on locomotives.

In the early days of manufacturing, air compressors were large, slow and pricey. That all changed in 1884 with C.G. Holzwarth’s patent for a screw-type compressor, which revolutionized these tools by delivering greater efficiency than the other models of the time. Holzwarth’s innovation quickly became the standard for a long while to come.

In 1888, the marvel of portable air compressors was first brought to life by Ingersoll Rand. Compact enough to be handled by a single person, this sophisticated device was driven by a gasoline engine, ushering in a new era of convenience and efficiency.

In the late 1890s, the Chicago PneumaticTool Company constructed a revolutionary air compressor station - the first of its kind. Featuring a powerful central compressor and an elaborate network of hoses and pipes providing pressurised air to multiple workstations, it was a landmark moment in industrial technology.

In 1903, Ingersoll Rand provided the New York Stock Exchange a way to beat the heat: an air compressor used to cool the entire building, thus making it the first air-conditioned structure.

In 1953, Atlas Copco made a revolutionary breakthrough with the invention of the very first oil-free air compressor. Now, these compressors are the rule rather than the exception when it comes to almost any application requiring compressed air.

In how screw compressor works , Campbell Hausfeld launched the FP209599AV, the first ever air compressor purposely designed and engineered for the convenience of a home workshop.

Air compressors are today employed for a broad range of uses, ranging from keeping car tires pressurized to enabling air powered instruments and cooling systems.
