3M Coliform & E. Coliform Count Plate

Our newest product, the 3M E. coli & Coliform Count Plate, is no exception and provides an innovative, easy-to-use solution for rapid E. coli and total coliform count results in just 18-24 hours.

This two-in-one indicator test is sample-ready eliminating the time consuming step of preparing media/agar dishes. The plates are validated to perform at both ISO and FDA/BAM temperatures allowing flexibility for use in a variety of environments.

The plates contain a sample-ready culture medium system which contains Violet Red Bile nutrients, a cold water-soluble gelling agent, 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-D-glucuronide (BCIG) an indicator of glucuronidase activity and tetrazolium indicator to facilitate colony enumeration. This unique combination of selective and differential indicators along with inducers facilitates better recovery of E. coli and faster coliform detection with less contamination.


These plates are characterized by a deep purple-blue color of the gel when the growth area is confirmed as containing E. coli and the presence of gas bubbles. They are also easily identifiable by their contrasting red color of the yeast and mold colonies. These features make the plates easier to read and interpret in comparison to traditional nutrient agar coliform plates.

Once the plates are inoculated, they are placed in a resealable pouch and stored at 2- 8°C. The plate is readable in about 24 hours with the use of an appropriate reader. The readings should be recorded in units of cfu/mL. A coliform level above 20 indicates a high number of coliforms and a potential for contamination. A coliform level below 20 means that fewer coliforms are present and a low risk for contamination.


In addition to a lowered risk for contamination, the fast, simple and reliable results from the new plate help manufacturers to meet production schedules more efficiently. They can also work with their suppliers to ship product more quickly and improve overall customer satisfaction by reducing the number of days that products are held back for E. coli testing.
