One of the hypnotic Montage presentations that were projected on Auckland's Spark Arena giant screen featured representatives from pharmaceutical companies hawking a drug that claims to change your perception. This is a fitting illustration of what you can be expecting to see during the Tame Impala performance, where Kevin Parker's psychedelic project has a universe of its own.
Tame Impala might have landed on the music landscape in 2010 with the appropriately titled Innerspeaker an enormous guitar-rock album that was infused with psychedelic hues. Lonerism (2012) featuring its LCD-screen-level psychedelia was the album that really made Tame Impala stand out. It endeared Tame Impala to the festival environment (which was at the time dominated by gaudy EDM and gaudy Kanye West event-rap) while also sounding like classic rock.
Lonerism was more than just an garage band thanks to their symphony orchestration. From the fast-moving guitar riffs of "Elephant" and the massive tom-tapping "Feels like We're Going backwards", the band showed they were much more. In the year following when they released 2015's Currents the band refined its craft further to produce an album that's both rock and pop at its best.
tameimpalamerch will ensure they remain a staple in the festival circuit until 2022, even though the funk-rock sound of Currents was instrumental in bringing Tame Impala to Coachella headlining status. And even though this tour is supposed to be a celebration of the release of their forthcoming album Rushium but a full sonic tour of their past releases has left the people in attendance clamoring for more.
