Power in democracy is often divided into different parts or branches. Each branch is responsible for different things. This is know as 'Separation of power'
3 main government branches:
Legislative-makes laws and benefit society and protect rights. Eg - Congress, Maryland General Assembly
Executive- enforces laws that are passes to make sure people obey them. Eg president, Governor
Judicial- interprets or judges the law o make sure the laws are fair'y and appropriately. Eg Supreme Court, Montgomery county Circuit Court
Principle 4- The purpose of democratic government is to provide for common good
Provide public services- roads, public schools, markets
Protect rights- freedom of religion, voice to an opinion, fair trail
Promote rule of law-idea that government , business and other groups agree to follow rules. The rules apply to everyone.
Prepare for common defense- They want to be able to defend themselves. The government takes on the role in defending the nation.
Support the economic system- Citizen are less likely to seek to change or threaten the government since things are going well.
Principle 5- In democracy, the government and the citizens work together
Citizens are the people that a government is organized to protect and help. They have a responsibility to vote, to be informed about issues, serving in military, and obeying laws,
