Now that you know more about Upse.net, let’s talk about the key features to look for when purchasing a TV. As TV technology advances, many consumers now consider purchasing a set with a 4K resolution. This provides a sharper, more detailed picture that allows viewers to view fine details more easily. High dynamic range (HDR) is another feature worth looking for. This displays a wider range of brightness levels, providing richer colours and more shadow detail.
Ultra-High Definition
About 15 years ago, televisions jumped from Standard Definition to High Definition (HD). This upgrade was more than just higher resolution—it also improved contrast, color, and speed. In 2015, the same sort of change is happening with Ultra-High Definition (UHD). A new organization called the UHD Alliance has set out a rough roadmap for what TVs should be capable of, but it’s still early days. The first spec that TVs need to be capable of is high dynamic range (HDR). This technology makes highlights much brighter than they could be in SDR, and it also allows for deeper blacks so objects like the sun or a photon torpedo really pop off the screen. The next spec is wide color gamut, which encompasses a larger color space than HDTVs were previously capable of, making colors more vivid and allowing for more subtle gradations. Finally, TVs need to be capable of supporting high frame rate video at 120 frames per second, which is twice as fast as standard HDTVs.
Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos televisions take surround sound to the next level. Unlike traditional 5.1 and stereo systems, which only produce sounds from speakers around the room, Dolby Atmos surround sound adds overhead sound sources to the mix, creating an immersive environment that more closely represents how humans experience sound. To enjoy Dolby Atmos content, you need a TV that supports it as well as a compatible sound system. This could be a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar or a full Dolby Atmos home theater-in-a-box (HTiB) speaker setup. Fortunately, in 2023, there are a growing number of Dolby Atmos-compatible devices to choose from. The latest streaming services, including Disney+ and Apple TV+, are adding Dolby Atmos movies and shows regularly, while most new 4K televisions have an Atmos soundtrack. Additionally, many newer smart TVs with Dolby Atmos support can transmit Atmos content directly to a connected AV receiver via HDMI ARC or eARC ports.
HDR
Not long ago, HDR TVs were exotic devices that cost more than other sets and offered limited content. But today, the vast majority of new TVs are HDR-capable and HDR movies, TV shows, and live broadcasts have become very common on streaming services, Blu-ray, and cable and satellite. The difference is that an HDR TV displays much brighter highlights than previous TVs, which can make the fire of a rocket launch or a sun setting pop. It also expands the range of colors to offer more vivid blues, greens and reds. The HDR specification includes several formats, including HDR10 (which is on virtually every modern 4K TV), Dolby Vision and HDR10+. The latter two are more advanced and support HDR on a frame-by-frame or scene basis, improving contrast ratios and color and offering the most realistic image possible. MicroLED technology ($1,000+) aims to compete with OLED by using a backlight filled with micro-LEDs that act like organic OLEDs.
Smart TV
It's also worth looking for smart TV functionality that supports your favourite services. This allows you to stream media content from your mobile device or tablet to the screen. It's best to have high-speed Wi-Fi to avoid any issues with buffering or low-quality streaming. Almost all smart TVs come with a number of HDMI ports that can support external devices like gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and sound bars. Some even have HDMI ARC, which lets you send audio data to and from your soundbar using a single cable without the need for an extra connection. The LG G2 is a good example of an excellent smart TV, with its inky blacks, HDR support and the latest version of WebOS. This is a great option for users who already have an established smart ecosystem at home, as it can integrate with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants. It's also worth aiming for a model that's energy efficient, as this will help to reduce your electricity bills.
