O zamanki Osmanlı topraklarını düşünecek olursak zaten Anadolu, Rumeli ve balkanlar Osmanlı egemenliğindeydi. Bizans Osmanlı toprakları ortasında küçük bir kara parçasıydı sadece. Ayrıca eski gücünde değildiler. Katolikler şehri onarılmayacak düzeyde tahrip etmişti. Şehirde kıtlık bas gösteriyordu. Ancak yine de o aşılmaz surlar fethe izin vermiyordu. Nihayetinde Fatih'in elindeki 400.000 kişilik orduya karşı Bizans 10.000 kişilik bir ordu, az bir şey Ceneviz yardımı, son olarak da o aşılmaz surlarıyla direndiler. Normal şartlardaki insan gücü farkı görülüp o surlar da eninde sonunda aşılacaktı. O surları yıkacak derecede güçlü toplar, silahlar elinde sonunda icat olacaktı. Sonuçta da İstanbul bizim olacaktı. Onun kaçışı yok. Fakat Fatih'in hırsı ve azmi süreci hızlandırdı sadece. Bu sayede Osmanlı İmparatorluğu da daha çabuk cihan imparatorluğu haline geldi. İstanbul'u Fatih fethetti demek yanlış sayılabilecek kadar eksik bir ifadedir. Bizans'ın fethi Alparslan'ın Malazgirt savaşı ile başladı, Kılıçaslan'ın Miryakefelon savaşı ile bir gün tamamlanacağı kesinleşti ve Fatih de son noktayı koydu. O başaramasa oğlu Beyazıt o başaramasa torunu Yavuz o da olmazsa Kanuni Sultan Süleyman... illa biri o büyülü şehri Türk vatanı yapacaktı.
