There are a lot of famous cartoon pets and cats, however there's only one famous cartoon platypus. This is because of Phineas and Ferb and the creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh deserve a ton of credit for helping to make Perry the Platypus the most memorable character in the show. He is the pets of the brothers, and he works as a spy in order to stop the evil Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz.


The sly and charming character is loved by the fans of the series, and his popularity has helped to place the elusive creature on the map. Perry is featured in a number of educational books and toys and video games. What is it exactly that makes Perry the Australian mammal so unique?



While the platypus might look as if it's a collection of animal parts sewn together but it's actually a robust and well-rounded mammal. It's classified as a monotreme, along with echidnas and wombats as well as being unique among mammals in that it lays eggs, not live babies. Platypuses do not have teeth, but grind their food using teeth pads made of keratin which they replace regularly throughout their lifetime. While they're active in the evening and dusk, the platypuses prefer to spend their entire time in their burrows. The temperature of their burrows can be extremely at times during the daytime and they use this to stay warm. After that, they will are able to emerge for a while to hunt for crayfish, or crustaceans. They'll then return to their burrows and relax until the evening or following day.


You're likely to see a platypus if you're in Australia. National Parks and Wildlife Service has a variety of platypus colony across Australia, including Sydney. These colonies are part of the Platypus Discovery Centre in Narrabeen Lagoon, where visitors can observe platypuses as they swim in their natural habitat.


Despite their reputation as one of the most bizarre creatures in nature they are actually very social species. They're loyal and develop solid bonds with their owner. They're also sly, clever and committed to their jobs. They're so clever, they often cause their enemies to think they're weak.


So when it comes to choosing an animal for their principal character the producers of Phineas and Ferb went with an animal that's not easily identified on the surface hoping to give viewers a different perception of this mammal that is unique.


It's clear that their decision was the right one since Perry has rapidly become an iconic character in the popular animated show. With the news that it's now getting a second life through Disney+, let's hope that they can keep the magic going!
