In 1986, aged 49, Alistair and Helen relocated to Saudi Arabia where he was appointed GE’s Vice President for the Middle East, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe. In 1965 Alistair graduated with honours from Edinburgh University with a specialist enterprise management diploma. He then studied at London School of Economics, specialising in productiveness.

Acclaimed wildlife documentary filmmaker and Wits benefactor Dr David Alexander Hughes (BSc 1959, BSc Hons 1960, PhD 1964) died in Cape Town on 29 March 2009, aged 71. Along along with his wife and associate, Carol, Hughes was one of the earliest and most gifted wildlife filmmakers on the planet. His work gained international awards together with two Emmys; one for Rain Forest (1983) which raised the alarm about deforestation and the opposite for Lions of the African Night, which featured unprecedented footage filmed within the Kruger National Park. Born in Springs on 29 August 1937, Hughes matriculated from Michaelhouse. He was working at the Institute of Marine Science in Miami, USA when a colleague invited him to Costa Rica to witness the nesting of hundreds of turtles. So captivated was Hughes by the sight that the BBC, on viewing his preliminary footage, enlisted him to return to Central America for one more season.
A British authorities grant in 1969 facilitated a study into the exploitation and dynamics of the commercially necessary fish on Jamaican reefs. This research proved to be the seminal work of his profession, demonstrating the necessity to manage such fisheries on a multispecies foundation. He taught fisheries biology at the University of Papua New Guinea and started analysis into giant clam progress charges. His analysis on this subject contributed in course of main aquaculture and re-stocking programmes of those near-extinct species.
