The Unit of Measurement - dB
The db (decibel) is a unit used to describe ratios of electrical signals and other quantities. Often it is used in conjunction with another unit to create an absolute measure of power, such as the dBu or dBm, but it can also be used on its own. It is useful because the human ear is less sensitive to low and high frequency sounds than it is to mid-frequency sounds. In audio applications, sound pressure level is commonly expressed in dB SPL.
The term dB is also sometimes used in physics and optics, such as to describe blocking units or optical density.
