Improving Reading Strategies: Implied Reading
We are improving reading strategies for work and school in this series of articles. Today we will learn how to boost comprehension using implied reading.

Implied reading is information the writer expects one to know. check here is almost always considered common knowledge. For example, read the following sentence: the person wore a blue suit. The writer expects you to know what is really a man. They expect you to know what is really a suit, and also what is the color blue. Actually, if you didn't have any knowledge of your world you could not read. Let me explain.

When you read, your brain searches to match the words on the page to the knowledge it has stored in memory. Once you start to see the word man on page, the human brain searches for the meaning and you visit a picture of a man in your mind. When you see the word blue, the human brain recognizes and sees the colour. Sometimes implied reading can cause comprehension problems because folks have different maps.

Suppose you're reading the famous novel, "Moby Dick," and you live in Albuquerque, New Mexico that is in the desert. Imagine you've never travelled. You've never seen the ocean, or been on a boat. Now imagine someone else scanning this same book who was simply born and raised in Portland, Maine. They have a great deal of experience fishing in the ocean. Though it is the same book, would both people experience the book exactly the same? Needless to say not! These differences can sometimes cause major comprehension problems.

Since you can plainly see understanding the three forms of reading is definitely an essential aspect in improving reading strategies for your entire day to day learning. In my next article, I will cover inferential reading, the highest level of learning.
