Tonic-clonic seizures are characterized by abnormal electrical firing of the cerebral cortex. They are characterized by uncoordinated movements, drowsiness, and confusion.
Seizures are an unpleasant experience for both patients and nurses. Patients may report pain, strange tastes, and lights and spots in their vision. If a seizure continues for more than five minutes, the patient is considered to be in an emergency.

Patients at high risk for a tonic-clonic seizure should have adequate seizure precautions. These include a pillow, airway protection, and supplemental oxygen.

Once the seizures stop, nurses should assess the patient's breathing pattern, patent airway, and overall respiratory compromise. They should also ensure that the patient is alert, and that they are not choking.
