Tonic-clonic seizures are convulsions caused by a disturbance in the electrical activity of the brain. They occur in up to 25 percent of people who have epilepsy.
Seizures can be life threatening. During a seizure, people may feel confused and fearful. Their muscles may be stiff, they might lose bladder control, and they may lose bowel control.
In general, a tonic-clonic seizure lasts for five minutes. It is characterized by jerking movements, stiffness, and a foaming mouth. However, it can last longer.
If you think you have a tonic-clonic seizure, you should see your doctor right away. He or she will ask questions about your medical history, and will perform tests to examine your balance and muscle tone. Your doctor will also ask about the person who is with you at the time of the seizure.
Your doctor will check your airway, and can tell you what to do. For example, you might need to tilt your head back to open your airway. Also, you might need to remove glasses and loosen restrictive clothing. You can also use a soft object under your head to protect your breathing.
If you are unsure of what to do, it is best to call 911. A seizure can cause death, so get emergency medical attention immediately.
