How to Keep a Positive Mindset
Keeping a positive mindset may sound like a cliche, but it’s associated with a host of health benefits. Optimism, acceptance, resilience, mindfulness and integrity are some of the characteristics of this type of attitude.
When negative thinking arises, challenge it. Boost self-esteem that your pessimistic thoughts are a result of past events or exaggerated predictions.

1. Focus on the positives

People who are positive often view their lives as more expansive, and they can handle setbacks better. Having a positive mindset can lead to stronger relationships and can even boost your immune system. While it is important to try and stay positive, you should also be realistic. Striving to be happy and positive all the time isn’t possible, nor is it healthy.

Keeping a positive mindset can be hard when you feel overwhelmed or discouraged. But the key is to find ways to shift your focus and make positive thinking more habitual.

One way to do this is to start by identifying your triggers. For example, if you tend to get negative thoughts while driving, you can take steps to change that by listening to a fun playlist or avoiding traffic jams.

Another way to shift your focus is to start a gratitude journal. Write down five things you’re grateful for each day, and it can help you to keep a positive mindset. Similarly, you can also try to identify your personal strengths and think about how you can use them in different situations throughout the week.

2. Change the language you use

Changing the language you use can have a huge impact on your mindset. Negative self-talk, such as blaming others, complaining, being pessimistic, and having a lack of trust in other people, has been linked to specific mortality issues, as well as an inability to cope with the challenges life throws at us.
Instead, try using positive language to describe yourself and your abilities. This can help you see your own complexities in a more empowering light; liberate yourself from the self-limiting beliefs that lead to a fixed mindset; and unlock your full potential to achieve what you want in life.

Encourage positive language among your team too. It might feel like a little ‘spin’ at first, but with a bit of time it will become part of their mindset. This could be as simple as encouraging them to talk about their strengths during meetings and even making it a focus of presentation preparation. Alternatively, you can make them aware of the language they are using and then use 1-1 meetings to reflect on this.

3. Take care of yourself

While you can't always control your circumstances, there are things you can do to keep a positive mindset. One of the most important is taking care of yourself. This doesn't just mean eating well and exercising, but also giving back to others.
Whether it's by writing in a gratitude journal, starting a side business, or simply doing daily acts of kindness, keeping yourself motivated is key to maintaining a positive outlook. You can also try adding thought triggers to your life like changing your phone wallpaper, using a mantra in your head during stressful situations, or even making the password on your computer something that makes you happy.

Having a positive attitude doesn't mean ignoring unpleasantness or glossing over problems, but it does help to have a clear vision of your goals and be confident that you will get there in the end. You should also make an effort to avoid negative energy, especially in the form of gossip and complaining, and instead be a source of positivity for those around you. The good news is that it only takes a few small changes to turn your negative self into a positive Pollyanna.

4. Surround yourself with positive people

Surrounding yourself with positive people can help you keep a positive mindset. These can be your friends, family, or coworkers. Mental conditioning will help you see the good possibilities in situations, and they will encourage you to work toward your goals.

These people will be able to lift you up when you’re feeling down. They’ll have a glowing energy that you can’t help but feel when you’re with them. They’ll also have a sense of humor and be able to reframe their perspective on a situation. For instance, they might find the stress of traffic jams annoying, but they’ll focus on how convenient it is that they have cars to get around.

On the flip side, you should avoid negative people at all costs. They’ll be draining and can easily bring you down. You’ll notice their influence ever so slowly, and you may even begin to mimic their behavior. You should only surround yourself with positive people who care about you and want to see you succeed. Negative people tend to poo-poo any successes you have and will only dwell on the negative aspects of your life.

5. Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude can help you keep a positive mindset. When you’re feeling down, focus on all the things you have to be thankful for, such as your family and friends or even a sunny day. Writing these thoughts down or saying them aloud can help you feel more positive.

If you know someone who tends to dwell on the negatives, try to surround yourself with positive people instead. You may unconsciously imitate the attitudes of those you spend time with, so be sure to choose your social circle wisely.

Practicing positive thinking can help you cope with challenges and reduce your risk of depression and other mental health problems. It can also boost your immune system, protect you from heart disease, and improve your physical health. Make a habit of trying to be as positive as possible, and you’ll see the benefits in both your mental and physical health.
