Tonic-clonic seizures are the most common type of seizures. They involve abnormal electrical firing of the cerebral cortex. These types of seizures cause the patient to lose consciousness and voluntary muscle control. This can lead to memory loss and other effects.
The typical EEG findings are an abrupt onset of 3-Hz spike wave complexes. Typically, this type of seizure lasts between three and five minutes.
