In China, the tiger is usually depicted as a symbol for strength and power. Children are often given this toy in order to shield them from illness and evil and to bring good luck. They are usually colorful and feature exaggerated smiles and eyes. This pillow/toy made of tiger cloth is not an exception, though it is not as bright like the other ones I've seen. online store was created probably around the turn of the 20th century because it was donated to the Horniman Museum (Bu lao hu) by the ethnographer Otto Samson in 1951. It's possible it was made prior to 1951, as similar tiger-themed pillows in the Horniman Museum were dated as 1930s.
