Tiger Pillows taken from the Horniman Museum
This wacky take on a tiger is made of carpets dating from hundreds of years ago. Its piercing blue eyes and distinctive stripes of red on a body that is pink pop against a light aqua blue background. tigerpillows can add a darker olive green velvet to the mix for a style that's just as striking and versatile.



The exact date of this tiger cushion is not known, but Dr. Otto Samson gave a similar cushion made of cloth in 1951. He was conducting research in China between 1929 to 1948. It is likely that the item was made prior to 1948 since tigers have been often seen in Chinese art.


Cloth tiger dolls (Bu laohu, Bulaohu Wu which translates to "tiger pillows") are a kind of toy that children get to protect them from illness and harm and to bring them luck. These toys are usually identified by a sly face, short legs and plenty of material. This image from the Horniman Museum is different because it doesn't feature the tiger, and it has a unified color scheme.


Johnson Hartig is the designer of this cushion. He also designed the line of fashion Libertine. His work combines elements of low and high culture with a sly riff and brainy references, all with an irreverent, soulful spirit. This tiger cushion is an interpretation of an Tibetan Tiger pattern into a stripe of lavish Italian Scalamandre Velvet that can be easily incorporated into any decor that is anything from chic to a wildly eclectic. The custom-tailored pillow comes with an incredibly plump down and goose feather insert with an unintentional zip closure.
