Remember The Purpose
I have just finished watching (again) one of my all-time favourite movies: "Remember the Titans". In the movie, Denzel Washington plays coach Herman Boone. He is the newly appointed coach of the TC Williams High School football team. The movie is set in 1971, inside the era when America was de-segregating the education system but for the first-time allowing black and white students to visit a similar high school graduation. As such, the football team, comparable to society during the time, was deeply divided like race. Black and white players were more concerned with their place on the team, defending what they believed was theirs and decreasing the accountability of folks their particular race so they would maintain their place on they. Needless to say, this designed a dysfunctional and conflictual culture and something that might are already highly ineffective over a football field.
While such a thing happens inside the context of the Hollywood movie, unfortunately, these kinds of division, divisiveness and territorialism isn't that uncommon from the teams we use. And whilst the degree of this dysfunction isn't as obvious as inside movie, portions of these dynamics still play out on the regular basis.
From the start of their off-season training camp, coach Boone sets a bad tone for the team; he makes the purpose from the team clear and explicit - the purpose will be "perfect" in every single aspect in the game. He also sets the culture by holding team members and even fellow coaches accountable to "perfect" culture, along with personally demonstrating abdominal muscles culture he is trying to create within his team.
In the last stages of the movie, when the c's is behind at half time inside the State Championship game, he tells the c's that as part of his eyes they are already perfect, of course, if they win or lose that game is immaterial. One with the team leaders then speaks on behalf in the team and reminds coach Boone along with his team mates with the original purpose and goal in which they commenced the summer season - to be "perfect". He says that as individuals these are not perfect, but as a team they're still perfect as they may be still undefeated and intend to stay like that. At this point, it's clear that the original goal and purpose in the coach, has now become the reason with the players themselves. As one would expect, the team goes on to win the overall game as well as the somewhat predictable Hollywood ending ensues.
But what Commercial mediation Sydney will we learn from this movie which we could sign up for our personal teams and organisations?
Firstly, for teams being effective the purpose should be clearly stated. Also they leaders should model and embody that purpose themselves.
Secondly, there needs being process whereby individuals within they are aligned to that purpose; they have to buy-in to the purpose in order that it becomes their own. Team members in most cases not go above and beyond the call, they will not shoot for excellence and they're not going to be able to create powerful workplaces if they are working towards somebody else's purpose or a purpose that they can don't identify with. It is once that purpose becomes their particular that truly exceptional teams are made.
Thirdly, there needs to be a powerful culture of accountability to ensure individuals within the team act, think, behave and communicate, etc in ways that's in service of these purpose. Building individual and team chance to have "difficult conversations" allows managers and associates to hold themselves, and each other, accountable when actions usually are not in service and aligned on the stated purpose.
