Values - What Do They Mean to Your Business
Our values are what drive us and the reason why that we take actions in life and running a business, essentially they are things that are essential to us. Values also explain why sometimes we are able to have disagreements with other people or not can get on with them at all, simply because our values conflict or others might not respect them, especially as most people don't understand this part of our psychology. Knowing your values and others values in business might help improve relationships and in working with challenging (I don't like the word difficult as it's too limiting) people. Knowing our very own values can help us understand why we do or usually do not do something.

To give you an idea of what values are this is a short and by no means definitive;

Accuracy,
Punctuality and Timeliness,
Responsiveness,
Safety,
Cooperation (Teamwork),
Creativity,
Respect,
Loyalty and
Integrity.
So to find out your values it best to sit down in a quiet room for 10 minutes and write a list of words that are important to you, It's best never to use a set of words as crib sheet though just let your unconscious do the task. You should end up with around 10-15 values on your own list and right now, you may be beginning to come to some realization about why you do things or get feelings using situations.

The set of words that you have come up with as your values are only for you, someone may have a similar list but the words could mean something very different to the other person

Lets now look at how they can affect us by taking the value of creativity, In case you have a value of creativity and that value isn't being met, for example you feel you're being stifled by having to do an excessive amount of paperwork, you'll start to become unmotivated in your organization, and potentially depressed or even ill, that is until that value has been met or until you've moved from the situation (the business) causing the problem. This may often function as cause for self sabotage of success in a business where consciously you may be working to grow your organization but it's just not happening and that is because your unconscious is stopping you as you are not doing why is you happy.

Hierarchy of values

So now you've got that list of values it is time to sort them out and present them a hierarchy, The best way to do this would be to write each of your values on a bit of card or paper then take two of these and ask yourself easily could only have one of these which one would it not be? The one you select should then go on top, you then do that with the rest of one's values until you have them in order. The very best five of those values are the values that are really important to you and the ones that you should be met to become happy.

So what if you are not achieving something in your business? let's say you are not making enough money, and there is more month left by the end of the amount of money than money left by the end of the month! It is advisable to check to see where your value of money, financial security or financial freedom is in your values list, Is it there at all?
