Tonic and Clonic Seizures
Clonic and tonic seizures can affect children and adults alike. These types of seizures are characterized by rhythmic jerking movements. They may also involve loss of consciousness.

The jerking and twitching in clonic seizures usually occur in the hands, fingers, and legs. In contrast, tonic and myoclonic seizures are generally less intense, but they occur on both sides of the body.

If you or a loved one experience a seizure, it is important to keep yourself safe. You should call a doctor if a seizure lasts for more than five minutes. Also, try to stay calm and loosen tight clothing.

A person suffering from a tonic or clonic seizure may have a hard time breathing. He or she may feel bluish. He or she might bite the tongue or the inside of the cheek. He or she might have a groan, cry, or moan.

The stridor (or squeal) and other gurgling sounds that a person experiences during a tonic seizure are caused by the muscles being stiffened. He or she might have difficulty breathing and urinating.

Tonic and clonic seizures are very dangerous, so you need to be cautious when you or a loved one are experiencing a seizure. You should avoid putting something in the mouth of someone who is having a clonic seizure.
