Tonic-clonic seizures are the most common type of seizure and occur in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. These seizures can be caused by epilepsy, brain injury, head trauma, strokes, aneurysms and other health problems.
The first stage of a tonic-clonic seizure is called the tonic phase. During this phase, the arms and legs become stiffened and may begin to jerk rapidly and rhythmically. This phase usually lasts several minutes and is followed by the clonic phase.

What to do when you or someone else has a tonic-clonic seizure
When you see a person who is having a tonic-clonic seizure, you must stay by them until they come out of it. Protect them from getting injured and make sure they can breathe.
Call for emergency medical help if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or if you can’t tell how long it lasted. This is called status epilepticus and needs urgent medical attention.
Your doctor or another healthcare professional will check your breathing, balance, coordination and reflexes. They will also ask you how the seizures started and who was around at the time.
Your doctor will also order tests to check the electrical activity of your brain and nervous system. These tests will help your doctor diagnose the cause of your seizures and create a treatment plan.
