Tonic clonic seizures (TCS) are the most common type of generalized seizure. They cause jerking of the arms and legs, and stiffening of the body. In addition, TCS may also result in loss of bladder and bowel control.
Aside from the obvious physical symptoms, tonic clonic seizures can be diagnosed by video EEG monitoring. An EEG monitor records electrical activity in the brain, allowing the doctor to see where the seizure started.
Some of the signs of tonic clonic seizures include: frothing at the mouth, losing bladder control, urinating, passing out, and a sore tongue. You may also be afraid or confused after a seizure.
A few of the tests that your health care provider will perform to diagnose tonic clonic seizures include: a neurological examination, reflexes, and a detailed check of the nervous system. These tests will help determine if the seizures are provoked or due to an underlying condition.
Your doctor will also recommend testing to find out if other health conditions are causing your seizures. If the cause is a disease, your doctor will likely prescribe medication.
