A first tonic clonic seizure is a frightening experience. It is a generalised seizure, which usually lasts less than three minutes. This type of seizure is known to cause confusion, headache, and even bruises on the legs.

The main reason to seek treatment is because of the risk of recurrence. Studies show that the risk of recurrence after a first tonic clonic seizure can be as high as 30%. Assuming no risk factors, this is a compelling reason to begin treatment.
Antiepileptic drugs are prescribed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Choosing the right drug for the patient should include considerations of long-term safety and tolerability.
