10 Strategies To Build Your Pet Wellness Care Empire
Wellness Care for Your Pet

If you're a puppy, or a senior, wellness care is essential throughout the lifespan of your pet. Kittens and puppies require regular checkups to monitor growth and strengthen their immunity to common illnesses.

Pet insurance plans provide wellness coverage as an added benefit. However, the coverage for pet wellness differs from pet insurance in many ways.

Vaccinations

Vaccines have been recognized as saving more lives than any other medical treatment. They protect against diseases that could otherwise be fatal or cause long-term and severe suffering, pain, or death. In the majority of cases, prevention is more cost-effective as well as effective than treatment.

Immunizations are a crucial part of pet care, and can prevent serious diseases in dogs and cats as well as humans. Vaccines are prepared from dead or altered microorganisms that are administered into the body to trigger the immune system to react to the invader. In pet care at home can learn to recognize and fight off the disease-causing organism without being subject to the more severe effects of infection or illness.

Kittens and puppies must receive the full range of vaccines during their early developmental stages to build up a strong defense against infectious diseases. Our veterinarian will suggest the appropriate vaccines for your pet based on their age and lifestyle.

Rabies, distemper and parvovirus are regarded as the most important vaccines. They are required for all cats and dogs, as they protect against deadly infections that can be easily transferred to humans. The core vaccines are administered in two injections at the time of kittenhood or pup, and then boostered annually.

Other vaccinations are possible according to the risk factors and lifestyle. For example, dogs that visit boarding kennels, groomers training classes, or dog parks could require vaccination against bordetella (kennel cough), which is highly infectious, as well as leptospirosis, an zoonotic disease that could cause kidney and liver failure in pets as well as humans.

All pets are generally advised to get the hepatitis A vaccine as well as hepatitis B and C. They can help stop a variety of deadly diseases that can be passed from animals to people and vice versa. A combination vaccine called a DA2PP (or FVRCP) for cats or dogs guards against common diseases that can be transmitted between the two species. The lyme disease vaccine which is recommended for dogs that are frequently in areas where deer are frequently encountered, shields them from the bites of the illegitimately named deer tick which can trigger the serious bacteria-related infection that is known as Lyme disease.

Fecal Exam

A fecal exam, also known as a fecal floatation is a microscopic look at your pet's stools. This will allow your veterinarian to identify intestinal parasites, such as roundworms and hookworms. They may also transmit to other pets and family members.

A fecal sample can be collected in a variety of ways. Your vet could use a specialized fecal sample loop that is placed in the rectum and then pulled back to collect a sample. This technique is particularly useful in identifying cysts and worms. Your doctor can conduct the test directly by putting a small amount on the microscope glass. This type of test has the disadvantage that it will only be reliable if there is no fat or cellular matter in the sample.

Another method is the centrifugal float test. The feces are mixed with a specially-formulated solution to check for parasite eggs. This causes the eggs to float and can be visualized under microscope. This method is more sensitive than direct smears however, the results are dependent on the details of the procedure and the specifics of the specimen.

The best way to make sure that your pet is not suffering from intestinal parasites that may cause health problems or spread to family members and other animals is to have annual fecal exams. These infections can be uncomfortable for your pet and can cause more serious health issues that require treatment. Certain intestinal parasites like hookworms and roundworms can even be transmitted to humans and pose a serious health risk.

It is important to include fecal testing in your pet's routine to ensure wellness care. It is recommended that all pets undergo a fecal examination at least once every year, and more frequently for puppies and those living in areas that are prone to parasites. Intestinal parasites can be a major cause of illness for pets, causing diarrhea, weight loss and vomiting. The fecal tests can reveal parasites as well as blood or other abnormalities which could be signs of disease or infection.

Dental Exam

Dental health for pets is a crucial aspect of wellness care. Without proper oral care, pet teeth can get infected, which can lead to other health problems like bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. These conditions start when tartar accumulates on the teeth and causes damage to the tissues surrounding them. The buildup may also be absorbed into bloodstreams and then travel to other organs such as the kidneys, heart and liver. This can trigger inflammation and increase the risk of contracting serious diseases. Regular dental cleanings and at-home brushing help keep your pet's teeth in good condition.

During the dental exam, our veterinarian will examine the mouth of your pet for evidence of tartar and plaque. The vet will use an instrument for scaling to eliminate the tartar and the probe will be used to examine for pockets in the gumline, where periodontal issues begin. To look at the bones and roots of the teeth, X-rays are taken of the entire mouth.

Dental exams are recommended at least every year, but more frequent examinations are recommended for those at risk for dental disease or who are in their old age. The vet will also talk with you about your pet's weight, diet and behavior. The vet will provide you with information on any changes that you may observe in your pet and may suggest additional tests or treatments if required.

Wellness plans are a great way to pay for preventive treatments and save money on regular expenses, such as dental cleanings, wellness exams, and heartworm testing. These plans are similar to traditional pet insurance but they cover medical expenses that are pre-determined instead of covering a whole visit. Our veterinarians are more than happy to review the different plans with you.

Parasite Control

Parasites, whether internal or external, are a group of organisms that feed on your pet, and deprive her of vital nutrients. They can also damage the major organs and body systems, resulting in a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms. In extreme instances (such as heartworms) some of these parasites can cause death. Although many believe that parasites are a necessary part of being a pet parent but this doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Our team of vets knows the most prevalent parasites in your area and will explain how they can affect your pet.

Responsible pet parasite management can help reduce the chance of spreading disease to other pets and humans living in the home. This includes administering preventative flea-and-tick treatment throughout the year, wearing collars to keep ticks at bay and grooming your dog frequently, especially after she's been outside. Examining for signs of parasite infestation that include chewing, scratching, or licking, can help you ensure that your pet is not afflicted with these pests.

Internal parasites like tapeworms and roundworms are typically acquired by accident through the ingestion of parasite eggs discovered in areas that are contaminated by excrement from animals suffering from infection. These parasites are also zoonotic, which means they can be transferred from pets to humans (and in reverse).

Ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas are more likely to be found in urban areas with high number of pets, however they can be found in homes in all areas. The fleas can cause severe allergic reactions and transmit vector-borne diseases like Lyme disease, Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ticks can also pose an important issue in the sense of causing painful, itchy and allergic reactions in pets, as well as potentially transmitting vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and ehrlichia to humans.

At minimum all shelter pets must be provided with a basic internal and external parasite control regimen at time of intake. This should include a prophylactic treatment with the minimum of an oral dewormer that works against roundworms and hookworms as well as an insecticide and tick preventative (Nemex and Strongid are the most commonly used products).
