The Most Significant Issue With Common Houseplants, And How You Can Fix It
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be grown indoors. Indoors, many palms thrive, such as the robustly tolerant parlour and the elegant paradise palm.

The pothos that is popular and certain types of philodendrons (like the crotons with variegated colors) have attractive foliage and are relatively easy to cultivate. Orchids require bright sunlight and steady moisture, but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Aroids

The aroid family is vast and includes many of the most loved houseplants of the present. They are monocotyledonous and many species are valued for their foliage more than their flowers. They come in a broad variety of shapes, sizes and growth patterns and come in a great array of colors as well. These plants include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums, and colocasia.

These understory plants typically receive the sun's rays in a diffused manner, which is why they thrive in bright indirect light inside the home. They can tolerate lower lighting conditions, like a window facing north (just ensure that the sun doesn't directly shine on the leaves).

The majority of these plants thrive best in humid, warm climates. Place them in a pot with well-draining soil and use a potting mix that offers adequate aeration. Aroids can be sensitive to excessive watering, so be sure to be sure to check the top two inches of soil frequently. They may wilt, droop or develop dark brown soft spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

The plants in the bromeliad family have a distinct characteristic that allows them to store water in their leaves or in cups at the base of the plant. They also release water when needed by using trichomes. This makes them one of the most drought-resistant houseplants, but they could still benefit from misting often.

Some, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are cultivated for their vibrant foliage which may include stripes, spots or bands of color. Others, such as the Tillandsia and Vriesea species produce blooms that are brightly colored.

Certain bromeliads can be grown in the indoors all year long, whereas others need to be moved outdoors during warmer months when temperatures are above freezing. At the Safari Park, we can see bromeliads growing in our Hidden Jungle garden. The genus Guzmania contains a variety of tropical plants, including the pineapple (Ananas Comosus) which was introduced to Europe in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the New World.

Cacti

Cacti are a very popular option for a lot of people to plant in their homes. These special plants are adapted to desert conditions and most species have spiny stems. Many also produce fruit and flowers. The spines have a purpose - they can deter herbivores from eating the leaves and fruits.

Like other desert-adapted plants Cacti can store water in their roots and stems for dry periods. They can also store carbon dioxide in their stomata during the day and release it when photosynthesis occurs.

In low maintenance house plants and South America, some cacti like the cholla and the prickly-pear (Opuntia), are used to construct living fences. Others, including Lophophora williamsii (cactus peyote), have long been used to treat hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most popular houseplants, even though they lack flowers and fruits. Despite this, they're quite easy to cultivate. The key to success lies in a growing medium that mimics the forest floor. This should be abundant in organic matter, but also contain coarse gravel or perlite, for proper drainage.

A fern should be misted regularly depending on its requirements. They enjoy the humidity of living rooms and family rooms, however if you find the fronds turning brown or dropping leaves, it is a sign of low humidity.

The soil needs to be at a constant level of moisture, but not soggy, to avoid water logging and root rot. Simply insert your finger into the soil to test for moisture. It should feel moist to the touch, but not soaking wet. Avoid overwatering, since this can cause a yellowing of the fronds. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight since they dry the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Begonias are a great way to add color and a sense of vibrancy to your indoor space whether you display them in a vase, a macrame basket, or even in a garden. They thrive in indirect, bright sunlight and require a lot of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted begonias, typically categorized as bedding plants, are low-maintenance and easy to grow. The 'Dragon Wing' series is the best-known, with blooms of pink, scarlet, yellow and apricot on dark-bronze to green foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' collection for a compact version. They can grow from 12 to 15 inch tall.

They are sold as floor plants that can grow up to 4' tall and have beautiful leaves that feature Polka dot patterns on the front and back. They require regular watering and a monthly feeding with liquid fertilizer. Be sure to check the moisture levels of the soil frequently because they are susceptible to wilting when the soil is dried out. The begonias aren't fussy about the kind of soil they prefer, but they will appreciate a light, fast-draining mixture like African violet potting soil or one specifically made for house plants.

Palms

Palms add a tropical feel to the home, and are frequently used in indoor gardens. They need moderate maintenance and can become a statement piece in any room. They are hardy but can be killed by cold temperatures. They should be kept in the garage in winter or kept in the house.

Palm leaves are also referred to as palmate or pinnate and are V-shaped. The leaflets overlap or are joined together across their entire length. They are joined to a costa, which extends from the petiole of the leaf blade.

Several species of palms are harvested for their fruit and timber. Palms are used as shade trees in warm climates as well as indoor plants to provide an exotic feel. good house plants , Brassica pendula, is used as a plantation for coffee and for its edible fruit, whereas the tagua palm, Phytelephas aequatorialis, is used to make vegetable ivory and the rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras are often referred to as umbrella plants or octopus plants. They are among the most well-known types of houseplants. They are easy to cultivate and don't need much or any coddling.

Although they can be thriving in light conditions Scheffleras thrive in bright indirect light. Overexposure to direct sunlight can damage the leaves, while not enough light can cause the plant to become sluggish and floppy.

Regular watering is important but don't overwater. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Use a container that is only slightly bigger than the original pot when repotting. A pot that is too big will result in too much soil staying moist for too many hours.

Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. If tall house plants spot pests take them off and treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like neem oil. If you notice that your leaves are turning brown, it is likely due to a lack of moisture or temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias is a native of the subtropical islands of the Pacific is literally "lots" of shade. This plant perfectly fits that description. It is a beautiful plant with a twisted stem and beautiful leaves. It's a wonderful plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves are utilized to treat ailments such as diuretic, antitoxin and to treat fever, colds, flu and coughs. The plants have anti-inflammatory properties, antifungal and antibacterial ones. Studies have also found that they contain eight novel saponins of oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place your Polyscias in an sun-drenched area that doesn't reflect direct sunlight onto the leaves, as this may cause them to burn. Water the soil as it is dry but don't overwater it. This could cause root rot and even leaf drop. Fertilise with a houseplant labelled feed every four days in summer, but reduce feeding to every six weeks in autumn and winter.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons can be grown easily and they are a great choice for beginners and new gardeners. The classic trailing Philodendron hederaceum5 adapts to different light conditions and is able to grow quickly. It can be planted as a hanging pot or trellis outside in frost-free areas, or spread its heart-shaped foliage over a desk or bedroom window sill inside.

Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has leaves that are elliptical in a dark brown purple shade. Its unique color exalts its sculptural design and is perfect for modern spaces that have modern furniture, or even those decorated with black. Make sure that the philodendrons are located in a spot that receives indirect sunlight. Also, avoid giving them too much water. Overwatering may cause slowing growth and yellowing of the leaf edges. Use diluted, lukewarm water to feed the plant instead of directly putting it into the soil. Directly watering the soil can also shock philodendrons and cause them to lose health.
