An Overview of the Air Compressor: A Historical Primer
Long-standing and versatile, the air compressor has been involved in numerous uses throughout the centuries. Its initial purpose was to fuel tools in mining, particularly for the drilling of rock. In the 1800s, it was employed to operate bellows in forges and blast furnaces, subsequently being utilized to run locomotives as well as boats in the subsequent century.

Then, some eight years later, WilliamRankine developed and utilised a remarkable steam-powered air compression instrument. Rankine's invention played a pivotal role in the operation of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, among numerous other applications.
Shifting the railroad industry into the modern era, George Westinghouse invented the pioneering rotary air compressor in 1848. Driven by steam power, this device was adopted to translate the force of manually operated brakes into automated, mechanical ones for trains. Then 10 years later, Philip Diehl transformed the foundation of portable air compressing technology with his application operated by a gasoline engine. This ingenious design could be used to inflate tires quickly and easily.
In 1886, C.W. Harrison revolutionized the world when he unveiled his electric air compressor - an ingenious invention used in many applications, like powering air tools and pumping up tires. Then, in 1902, W.H. air leg rock drill stepped onto the scene with his ground-breaking gas-powered air compressor which also proved useful for its ability to drive air tools and inflate tires.
In modern times, air compressors are deployed for multiple purposes, such as supplying air to fuel equipments, providing pneumatic energy to machines, and even filling up tires with air.
