Easy House Plants
If you jumped on the houseplant bandwagon some time ago or are looking for new greenery to brighten your living space, there are many plants that are easy to grow. These houseplants don't care about their environment or watering, and are resilient to neglect.
The spider plant, for instance thrives in bright indirect light and is only watered when the top few inches of soil are dry. The peace lily is a low-key choice with a lovely leaf pattern.
Ponytail Palm
The ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is a tropical succulent that is simple to take care of. It doesn't require a lot of water or attention, and is a great option for busy people.
Place the plant near big, unobstructed, windows or in a sun-filled area with moderate light. Avoid cold, drafty areas and hot windows since they could dry out the foliage.
During the growing period it is recommended to water only when the soil is dry to the point of contact. The ponytail palm should be watered during winter is not advised. The plant will be in a dormant phase. Use a moisture meter when watering to avoid overwatering the plant.
The plants grow slowly and don't require trimming unless they are sick. They are tolerant of drought and can endure short periods of cooler temperatures, but they should be moved to a warmer space in winter. Fertilize a few times each year, during the spring and summer. Follow the directions on the label of the general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.
Schefflera
The Schefflera is a common tropical houseplant. It is also known as umbrella plant or the philodendron. It grows 4-6 feet high indoors with bright indirect light.
The schrefflera tolerates moderate to warm temperatures in the room however, it doesn't like cold drafts and could protest by dropping leaves. It requires a peat moss-based pot soil and is recommended to feed it monthly with a water-soluble fertiliser for houseplants.
If your schefflera is growing leggy, it may be in need of a new pot. It will thrive if placed in a pot that is that is a size or two bigger than its current container. This will encourage growth that is bushy. Pinch the growing tips to encourage branching.
The schefflera can be affected by spider mites. Spraying the leaves with the oil of neem or insecticidal soap can remove them. It is also prone to thrips, but washing the bugs with a moist cloth and spotting them will suffice.
Chinese Evergreen
The aglaonema or Chinese evergreen is among the most simple home plants to grow. It can withstand a broad range indoor conditions from dim light to bright spots and fluorescent lighting. It also is intolerant of cold temperatures, although it prefers warm ones.
Humus-rich potting soil is ideal for this hardy, slow-growing plant. Add peat moss for better drainage and to alkalize the soil. You should water your aglaonema often in the summer, but let the soil's top inch dry between waterings.
If your aglaonema is beginning to appear sluggish or drab, it could be a sign it needs more light, or it may have become pot-bound. Repot it in a pot that is one size bigger, and loosen roots that are tangled and add fresh pots and potting mix. Consider spraying the plant with soapy water or Neem oil when it's suffering from insects. There are dozens to choose from including solid green types like Aglaonema ‘Frasher’ and Aglaonema ‘Pseudobracteatum’ and variegated varieties such as Aglaonema ‘Silver Bay' and Aglaonema ‘Stripes’.
Calathea
This plant is a breeze to take care of when compared to the flimsier sisters like calathea whitestar, ornata and calathea. The gorgeous pin-striped leaves of Calathea can reach more than one foot in height and are beautiful in bright indirect light.
potted house plants require moderately moist, but not sloppy or soggy soil. If the soil is dry to your finger make sure to make sure to water the plant thoroughly. A good schedule of watering is every two days, but be sure to make sure to check the soil daily to establish an established routine. If the potting mix is not adequate, replace it with the mixture of 1 part peat for each part of perlite or Coco Coir. Feed calatheas with a diluted fertilizer for your houseplants twice a month during the Spring and Summer.
Leaves that droop or curl are an indication of dehydration. They can be treated with a day or so of additional water. The leaves' discoloration is likely caused by pests and can be treated by using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachias are simple to care for plants that will add the color of your home. Its oblong, variegated leaves can reach 12 inches in height.
Dieffenbachias, like other plants, can be affected by certain conditions that could impact their health and appearance. Brown leaf tips may indicate low levels of humidity, whereas yellow leaves can be caused by over- or underwatering. Inconsistently watering or the use of hard tap water may also cause problems.
If your Dieffenbachia begins to lose its shape, try moving it to a brighter location. Examine the soil's moisture with your finger from the first knuckle if you observe that the plant is sliding. Water the soil until the excess water drains from the drainage holes, and do this by soaking it in a long way instead of a light sprinkle. Plastic nursery planters are the best container for your Dieffenbachia because they let water drain more efficiently than porous Terracotta.
Peperomia
Peperomia is a low-maintenance plant that can be positioned in almost any room. Its dark green, shiny leaves are very attractive and can help to purify the air.
Peperomias enjoy warm temperatures and medium light, but not direct sun. If the leaves are scalding or discolored, it's an indication that they're getting too much sunlight and should be relocated to a shaded area.
Peperomias are epiphytic, just like their wild counterparts. They attach themselves to tree limbs and other tall structures to gain access to more indirect, bright sunlight. They prefer well-draining, arid soil that is dry between waterings. If you notice that the roots of your peperomia are growing out of its pot It's time to repot. Make sure to use a mix of houseplants that is free of peat and pot in a bigger container than the one you currently are using to prevent root rot. Feed your peperomia with a general houseplant fertiliser every month during the summer.
Arrowhead Vine
The Arrowhead vine (Syngoniumpodophyllum), an evergreen vine that can be planted indoors, is a leafy climbing plant. It isn't a flowering plant, but it is an excellent houseplant for newbies as it's very easy to propagate by cuttings.
To take a cutting from an existing arrowhead, find an arrowhead with a healthy stem, and then cut it off at the bottom of the petiole. Use clean, sharp, sterile hand pruning shears is the best choice for this job.
Water your arrowheads often, especially in the summer. Be sure to let the soil to dry out between waterings as archerhead plants don't like constantly moist soil. Winter is the only time they require fertilizer, since the plant is dormant. This plant has calcium crystals which may cause a burning sensation in the event of consumption. Beware of pets and children. Also known as nephthytis, goosefoot or the philodendron plant, arrowhead vine is a favorite among gardeners who want to enjoy its vibrant foliage and low-maintenance.
Snake Plant
Snake plants, also known as Sansevieria, are one of the easiest to cultivate houseplants. They thrive in low light, drought and have a few insect problems. This plant can also be used to clean the air inside your home. It converts CO2 into oxygen at daylight and then removes formaldehyde benzene and formaldehyde during the night.
Healthy snake plants have firm leaves that stand upright and have green leaves with yellow, cream or white edges. Leaves that drop or roll over indicate overwatering or lack of light thrips (small insects) or root decay.
Repot your snake plant in an area that is two inches larger when the roots are overcrowded or when it is outgrowing the pot it is in. Select a soil that has good drainage, with ideally one third perlite or sand and one third peat. Fertilize your plants monthly with a liquid fertiliser at half strength throughout the growing season.
Money Plant
Money plants are easy-to-grow and are considered lucky plants that can bring prosperity to those who take care of them. They also help to channel positive energy. They are great to present to friends to wish them luck and prosperity. These plants are known to thrive in the southeast direction of your home according to Vastu and Feng Shui.
In addition to being a great air purifier, the Money Plant is pet friendly and forgiving of less than perfect indoor conditions. However, it's recommended to keep track of the plant's fertilization and watering needs regularly. If the leaves turn yellow, it may be a sign of overwatering or the soil isn't draining properly.
The most common indicators of a healthy Money Plant are green leaves and long stems with light brown tips. It's a low-maintenance plant for the home that doesn't require much sunlight or fertilizer.
