All rodents have rootless, ever-growing incisors, with a hard enamel on the front and soft dentine behind. This is referred to as a diastema, or a gap between the incisors, also known as cheek teeth and the canines. They do not have canines or a spade-shaped teeth and only a few molars at the back of their mouths.

These incisors are sharp and chisel-like, but they are worn down with time through constant gnawing. They are the primary tool for tearing and chewing plant material, but also aid in removing invertebrates (animals without backbones) from their diet. Some rodents, like the golden hamster, are vegetarians and are fond of fruits and veggies.
