Easy Houseplants That Don't Require a Green Thumb
Do you want to add a touch of green to your office or home? These simple houseplants don't need you to be a gardener.
These low maintenance plants need just a little space in indirect sunlight, an occasional wipe of the leaves and an application of iron fertilizer every few months.
Ponytail Palm
Ponytail palms have a unique appearance and look great in various interior designs. They are easy to maintain and can flourish with minimal neglect, as long as you don't overwater them. house plant that grows slowly is a great choice for those who are new to gardening.
Pony tail palms have an exotic appearance and thrive in bright indirect sunlight. They are also drought-tolerant, and enjoy warm temperatures. They can be kept in their nursery containers but are best replanted into a porous pot, as this improves air circulation and lowers the risk of root rot.
This low-maintenance species is not toxic to cats, dogs and horses. It's a great choice for homes with pets, or children. It also acts as a natural pest deterrent. However, it is susceptible to diseases such as leaf streaks and bacterial spots that are usually exacerbated by high humidity.
The plant is slow-growing and requires very little fertilization. However, it can be fed twice as much feed for plants that are water-soluble in the spring and summer. Sometimes, the plant will develop offsets ("pups") near the base, which can be removed and planted in a separate area to help propagate the ponytail palm tree. Despite its name it is not a flowering plant indoors, which makes it difficult to produce viable seeds. Brown leaf tips are common during winter, and should be cut to keep the appearance fresh.
Schefflera
The schefflera is considered to be one of the easiest plants to care for. This tropical plant is also known as the umbrella-shaped tree. It is green with splayed, umbrella-shaped leaves. These plants can be trimmed according to your requirements and grow quickly under the right conditions. They also clean the air and are therefore one of the most sought-after indoor tropical plants.
Schefflera, just like other tropical plants, requires bright indirect light to flourish. They can withstand direct sunlight for a short period of time, but too much exposure will cause burns to the foliage. If you don't have enough light in your home, add a high-output lamp. You can also place your schefflera to a location that gets morning or late afternoon sunlight, but filter the light by using curtains.
When watering a schefflera ensure that you only water when the soil is dry on the surface. Overwatering will cause root rot. If you notice drooping or yellow leaves, it could be a sign that you have the insufficient amount of water.
You can also add more scheffleras by taking 6-inch stem cuttings during the summer. Place the cuttings between 1 and 2 inches deep in a container that contains Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix. Then, provide the basic treatment to encourage new growth.
Chinese Evergreen
Aglaonema is a houseplant that tolerates nearly any indoor climate. Contrary to philodendrons and peace lilies which require a lot of bright light, aglaonema can grow in dim or medium light conditions. best house plants does well under fluorescent lighting. Aglaonema is slow-growing and can be planted on tables or tabletops at first but will eventually turn into a huge floor plant.
You can choose from a variety colors and patterns for the Glaonema foliage. Aglaonema "Lucky Red" comes with leaves with hot-pink and green variegation while 'Siam Aurora' features dark green leaves highlighted by pink veins.
Aglaonema plants generally prefer medium to low lighting levels, but can tolerate brighter indoor lighting however the more vibrant and variegated varieties might require a bit more brightness. Avoid exposing any aglaonema plant to direct sunlight, as the sun's harsh rays can harm its delicate leaves. If you are growing an aglaonema in your workplace ensure that you cover the window. This will block out harsh sunlight.
Like other tropical plants that don't require any effort, aglaonema thrives in warm temperatures however it isn't able to handle sudden cold drafts. It is recommended to water it regularly but do not overwater it. The best way to determine the time to water is to put your finger in the soil; if it feels dry, the plant needs more moisture.
Calathea
Calathea is also called Goeppertia or Pinstripe plant is an exotic foliage plant that is easy to cultivate indoors. It is a native of dense jungles and rainforests, and grows in shady areas under trees, which makes it able to withstand bright indirect lighting indoors. It is essential to keep it away from direct sunlight because it can cause leaves to burn and the marks to fade. To prevent this from happening, you can move it or cover the window sill with a sheer curtain to protect it from direct sun.
In general, calatheas enjoy temperatures between 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They thrive in humid environments. They prefer light that is filtered since they are accustomed to brief dapples of sunlight rather than constant sunlight. This is the reason a south- or west-facing window could be ideal for them, however it is crucial to shade it from direct sunlight.
When a calathea is in its ideal conditions, it will do fine with a basic watering schedule. It should be watered regularly however it isn't necessary to keep the soil moist. By sticking your finger into the soil can help you determine when it is time to water. In the summer and spring, you should also use fertiliser that has been diluted.
Pothos
Pothos, also referred to as Epipremnum Aureum is a tropical houseplant which is easy to care for due to its trailing leaves. It is popular for macrame planters and hanging baskets, but can be trained to climb an exterior wall or along a trellis. The fast-growing vine is able to withstand an array of conditions. It is a great option for both experienced and novice indoor gardeners.
The leaves of the Pothos are available in a variety of designs and colors. The most well-known cultivars are "Golden Pothos," with its yellow and green variegation and 'Neon' with its bright, chartreuse-colored leaves, and 'Marble Queen, that is gorgeously marbled with white. Pothos is easily propagated from stem cuttings that can be cultivated in water or soil. To root a stem, cut a 4-6 inch length of a healthy stem, with a few attached leaves and just below the leaf node. Place the cutting into a glass that is filled with water or perlite/vermiculite that has been moistened. Within a few weeks, roots will begin to appear. Plant the rooted cutting into a small container with potting soil.
easy house plants prefer a warm location with indirect but bright light, though they can be tolerant of low-light conditions. Water it when the soil in the pot is dry and feed with an organic fertilizer for houseplants every six to eight weeks. Avoid cold drafts since they can cause damage to the leaves and slow growth. If the Pothos plants are pot-bound, remove the old soil and then repot the roots into new soil.
Peperomia
Peperomia plants are a great choice for those who are new to gardening because they perform well with almost no maintenance, and they are easy to grow them as an indoor plant. They are native to South America and love shaded areas, but do not need direct sunlight. They also enjoy warm temperatures.
These easy houseplants are available in many different shapes and colors and some varieties of Peperomia have interesting variegations. Peperomia argyreia can be referred to as the watermelon peperomia due to its leaves, which resemble to the rind of a watermelon. Other types that are popular include P. polybotrya with large, drop-shaped leaves. Then there's P. caperata, which has leaves that are deeply quilted and are slightly crinkly.
Depending on the type, Peperomias can be propagated by stem cuttings or leaf-petiole cuts. It is recommended to choose mature plants that don't have flowers or buds. Cut a stem of the plant by cutting the bottom 3 Take away any leaf that is below the lowest node of the leaf.
Plant peperomias using a fertile potting soil, or an organic mix that is rich in nutrients. house plants do not require fertilizer, but a light dose of fertilizer along the plant's edges could be beneficial every once or twice each month. Overwatering can cause peperomias plants to become leggy. It is best to allow the soil to dry out before watering it again.
