10 Things People Hate About Common Houseplants
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be cultivated indoors. Indoors, several palms thrive, including the robustly tolerant parlour and the beautiful paradise palm.

Pothos and certain types (such as the Crotons that have variegated) are easy to grow and have attractive foliage. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant moisture, but allow the soil to dry little between waterings.

Aroids

The aroids are a large family that includes many of the most sought-after plants in our homes today. They are monocotyledonous and many species are prized for their foliage rather than their flowers. They come in a broad variety of shapes, sizes and growth patterns and come in a variety of colors as well. They include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums and colocasia.

These understory plants typically receive the sun's rays in a diffused manner, which is why they thrive in moderate to bright indirect light in the home. They are also tolerant of low-light conditions like an east-facing window (just make sure the sun isn't directly shining upon the leaves).

The majority of these plants thrive in humid, warm climates. Make sure you use a potting mix that has adequate drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering, so be sure to be sure to check the top two inches of soil frequently. In excess watering, they can droop, wilt, or form dark brown, thick, mushy patches.

Bromeliads

Bromeliad plants have a special feature that allows them to store water within their leaves or a cup at the bottom of the plant. They also make use of trichomes to release water when required. This makes them one of the most drought-resistant houseplants, but they can still benefit from being misted often.

Certain species, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are grown for their colorful foliage, which may include spots, stripes, or bands of color. Certain species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea, produce spikes with vibrantly colored flowers.

Certain bromeliads can be used indoors all year round, while others are moved outdoors during the warmer months (where temperatures stay above freezing). In the Hidden Jungle garden at the Safari Park we can see bromeliads. The genus Guzmania contains many tropical plants which include the pineapple (Ananas comosus) which was introduced to Europe following Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a popular choice for many to bring into their homes. These unique plants are designed to desert conditions, and most species have spiney stems. Many produce flowers and fruits. The spines serve a purpose - they can deter herbivores from eating the leaves and fruit.

Like other desert-adapted plants cacti can store water in their stems and roots for periods of drought. They also store carbon dioxide in their stomata during the day, and release it when photosynthesis takes place.

Certain cacti, like the prickly pear (Opuntia) and the cholla, are utilized as living fences in Central and South America. Others, including Lophophora williamsii (cactus peyote) are long used for their hallucinogenic properties.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most popular houseplants despite the fact that they don't have flowers and fruits. Despite their lack of flowers and fruit they are very easy to cultivate. The key to success is a properly-drained growing medium that mimics the forest floor (rich in organic matter but with coarse gravel or perlite for proper drainage).

The needs of a fern should determine the frequency with which it is misted. They prefer humidity in living spaces and family spaces, however in the event that the fronds are turning brown or dropping their leaves, it is an indication that the humidity is not enough.

The soil should be well-moistured, but not soggy, to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Simply stick your finger in the soil to look for moisture. It should feel moist to the feel, but not wet. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause yellowing on the fronds. Avoid direct contact with radiators and direct sun as they will dry out the plant too fast.

Begonias

Begonias are a great way to add color and a sense of vibrancy to your indoor spaces, whether you display them in a vase, a macrame basket, or in the garden. They thrive when given indirect, bright light but require a good amount of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low-maintenance plants that are easy to cultivate. The 'Dragonwing' series is the most well-known and has blooms in pink, scarlet and yellow on dark-bronze to green foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' series for a smaller version. They grow to 12 to 15 inch tall.

They are sold as floor plants that can grow up to 4 feet tall and have beautiful leaves with dots of polka dots on both the front and back. They require regular watering and a bi-monthly feeding with an organic fertilizer. Be sure to check the moisture levels of the soil frequently because they are susceptible to wilt when the soil is dried out. The begonias aren't fussy about the kind of soil they prefer, however they will benefit from an easy-draining, light mix like African violet pot soil or one that is specially designed for houseplants.

Palms

Palms can bring a tropical feel to your home. They are commonly used as indoor plants. They are easy to care for and can create an attractive focal point in any room. They are tough however they could be damaged by cold temperatures, so they should be placed in the garage or protected in the home during winter.

Palm leaves are also known as palmate or pinnate, and are typically V-shaped in cross section. The leaflets are joined together or overlapped for a portion or all of their length. They are attached by a costa, which is an extension of the petiole into leaf blade.

Many species of palms are harvested for their fruits and wood. Palms are planted as shade trees in warm climates, and indoor plants to give the tropical look. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is used as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, and the tagua palm Phytelephas aequatorialis, is utilized to produce vegetable ivory and rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, also known as umbrella plants or octopus, are among the most commonly used varieties of houseplants. They are easy to cultivate and don't need much - or any - coddling.

While they can survive in moderate light Scheffleras prefer bright indirect light. Exposure to direct sunlight could cause burning of the leaves. Not enough light can cause the plant to become leggy and floppy.

Regularly watering is easy house plants but don't overwater. house plants can lead to root rot. Use a container that is only slightly bigger than the original pot when refilling. A larger pot could result with too much soil being left wet for a long time.

Watch out for insects like aphids or spider mites. If you spot pests take them off and treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like Neem oil. If you notice that the leaves are wilting the leaves, it could be due to a lack of moisture or a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias, which is native to the subtropical islands of the Pacific is literally "lots" of shade. This plant fits that description perfectly. Beautiful plant with a twisting trunk and gorgeous leaves, it's an ideal houseplant to promote a relaxing atmosphere in your home. The leaves are used for their medicinal benefits which include diuretic, antitoxin and to treat fever, colds, and coughs. The leaves have anti-inflammatory properties, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. The plants also contain eight new polysciosides (oleanolic acids saponins) and three polyacetylenes that are known.

Place your Polyscias in an area that is sunny but doesn't expose the foliage to direct sunlight, since this can scorch them. Water the soil when it is dry but don't overwater it. This could lead to root rot, and possibly leaf drop. Fertilise your houseplant with a labeled feed every four waters in summer months, but cut down to every six weeks in autumn and winter.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are easy to grow, making them an excellent option for new and novice gardeners. The classic trailing Philodendron hederaceum5 adapts to different light conditions and grows quickly. It can be planted in hanging pots or climb up a tree trellis outdoors in areas with no frost or spread its heart-shaped leaves on a desk or window sill inside.

To make easy house plants in your room, look at the cultivar 'Congo Rojo', which has leaves that are elliptical in a dark shade of brown purple. Its unique color highlights its sculptural shape and is a great choice for modern spaces with sleek furnishings or those decorated with black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons, and place them in a sunny area with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can cause the leaf edges to yellow and cause a slowdown in growth. Always use house plants and then add plant food using water-diluted solutions instead of directly into the soil. Directly watering the soil can also shock philodendrons and cause them to lose health.
