Cool House Plants That Will Brighten Up Your Room

It's not always possible to completely fill your home with greenery but a few interesting plants will add that extra spark to any space. We've compiled a list of amazing house plants with intriguing flowering patterns and bloom patterns that will catch your interest.

Try a Madagascar dragon with wavy leaves for a jungle feel in a small area. Majestic palms look stunning in bright indirect lighting.

Philodendron

Philodendrons are simple to care for and provide an exotic look to your home. They are tolerant of dry conditions and don't require much sunlight. If you want to brighten up your space with plants, the Lemon Lime Philodendron is a good option. The leaves begin pinkish and change into lime-green and neon yellow.

This climbing variety has leaves that can be as long as 2 feet in the wild, and has an almost plastic patina. It is also called the Naugahyde Philodendron due to its appearance resembling fake leather. It can be grown as an upright or cascading plant.

Another option is an alternative is the Horsehead Philodendron, which has deep green leaves that resemble those of a horse--but with a nose-down-below and ears-up-top look. It's best used as a climber with a post to attach it to, but can be grown upright if you prefer.

Upright varieties of philodendron tend to be slower to grow and take up less space. They can be found with larger leaves in a variety of patterns and colors as well as the Snake Plant.

Anthurium

Anthurium flowers last a long time and are beautiful. They are an easy-care plant and make a beautiful gift or centerpiece for any table. They are an emblem of love, affection and friendship. They are also a symbol of longevity and are a popular wedding option.

This tropical plant requires bright light to flower, but not direct sunlight since this could cause the leaves to dry out and brown patches. The best placement is a sun-filtered curtain. Maintain the soil evenly moist spring through fall and slightly drier in winter. The yellowing of leaves is usually a sign of water deficiency. Repot anthuriums every two years to promote the development of new air roots.

Anthuriums grow well indoors with temperatures of 75 F and high humidity. If the relative humidity drops below 50%, spray the plants with water a few times a week, or use a humidifier.

Anthurium is also known as the Hawaiian Heart,' 'Painters palette as well as 'Flamingo Flower. The flowers are available in shades of pink, red white, purple, and bi-colors, such as green/pink and white/red. The 'fluff' on the stem is actually a spathe which protects the tiny flowers on the spike (spidix). The spathe itself is available in a variety of shapes and colors.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboo (Dracaenasanderiana) can be planted in water or soil. The plants in soil must be planted one inch or deeper, while those in water should keep the water level at the top of the pot. The plant is a fan of bright indirect light. If you notice a brownish tint on the edges of its leaves after placing it close to windows then move it to a more shady area. The bamboo that is grown in water needs to be fertilized every two months using a weak liquid.

Water-grown lucky bamboo should be re-watered regularly to prevent stagnation and the accumulation of bacteria that can harm the stems, roots, and foliage. The water must be filtered or distilled, since tap water could contain chemicals that can harm the plants.

The plant is believed to attract wealth and prosperity. Place it in the fame and reputation section of your living or family room, or add to your dining table centerpiece to enhance wealth energy. Two bamboo stalks symbolize love. You can use this plant to promote an enjoyable marriage or happy relationship. This plant is also known as the feng-shui love charm.

String Plant

Ceropegia woodii, also known as a string plant (also called string of pearls), is a cool indoor plant that thrives in indirect, bright sunlight. The plant has odd pea-shaped leaves that make it stand out and is a great addition to terrariums and hanging baskets.

The string plant is a great option for those new to houseplants as it requires minimal care. It is a great choice for those who are unable to keep plants outside as it can withstand a slight frost.

Unlike other succulents, string plants prefer dry air and high humidity. Avoid placing it in areas that have drafts from home appliances or windows, as they could cause the delicate leaves to fall off.

If you find that your string plant is looking unbalanced with spindly vines and large gaps between leaves, it's time to cut the vines. Overwatering is a frequent issue for this type of plant, so make sure to water it whenever the soil feels dry.

Be aware that plants with string of pearls contain sap that can be harmful to humans and animals. Consumption of the sap could cause dermatitis or mild digestive symptoms. This is why it's best to keep the plant away from children and pets.

Staghorn Fern

Staghorn ferns are epiphytes which are able to attach themselves to tree canopy in the rainforest. They do not require soil to grow and can be mounted on various surfaces within the home. These unique foliage plants can be used to anchor airplant collections, add interest to orchids, or stand alone as a striking design element. They appear as if they've come from outer space or the ocean.

Staghorn ferns, besides their striking appearance, are safe for children and pets. They are also a great addition to any living space.

To keep your staghorn plant healthy, mist it regularly with filtered or rainwater. This is particularly important during hot, dry weather.

Fertilize your plants every month using a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer for houseplants. You can also increase the humidity around your plant using a humidifier or a tray filled with moist pebbles. Although staghorn ferns may not be as drought tolerant as some other houseplants, it's important to avoid overwatering. Root rot can be caused by excessive water. You can trim dead or dying fronds but don't take away the brown shield fronds which are important for reproduction.

Ficus

Ficus benjamina is one of the most stylish house plants. It adds elegance and freshness to your home. Often seen in hanging baskets or a climbing trellis, they are very versatile. Silver Cloud ficus has green leaves that are bordered with white and is a wonderful plant for hanging baskets or tabletop. Burgundy rubber plant is a different variant with deep-green leaves that turn a burgundy color when grown in bright light. There are two other varieties: fiddle leaf and weeping fig that grow into small trees with dark green leaves that have lighter veins.

Remember that ficus are quick to outgrow their pots and homes and therefore need to be frequently repotted. When repotting, choose an extra-large container and a high-quality potting soil. Avoid overwatering as ficus could get waterlogged and develop brown roots. The best method to determine if your ficus needs water is to stick your finger into the soil to see whether it's dry.

It cannot withstand sudden changes in light or humidity. It may drop its leaves when you move it from room to room. To help prevent this you should give it a permanent location in the home in which it can enjoy moderate to bright indirect sunlight.

Swiss Cheese Plant

Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as Swiss cheese plant, is a popular green house plant that has perforated leaves. Also known as ceriman, Mexican breadfruit or split leaf philodendron This epiphyte is native to rainforests of southern Mexico and thrives in our homes if given some extra space and a place with indirect light. It is interesting to note that a mature Monstera plant can produce fruit that is believed to taste like an ice cream or a combination of banana and pineapple.

This is a climbing plant and will thrive in a pot with drainage holes or a trellis. To help encourage this, connect the main stalk to a mossstick or sturdy pole. This mimics its natural environment and it grew by climbing mossy tree and other structures.

Swiss cheese plants thrive in bright indirect light. It is not necessary to water them, but they should be kept moist. Water the plant only when the top inch or two of soil appears dry. You can feed your plant a balanced liquid fertiliser every month by feeding it diluted mixes to promote faster growth. It is crucial to stop feeding your Monstera plant over the winter when it is not actively growing.
