cephalocaudal principle Principle of development stating that development tends to proceed from the head downward. According to this principle, the child first gains control of the head, then arms, then legs.
proximodistal principle Principle noting that development of the body occurs in an outward direction. The spinal cord develops before outer parts of the body; arms develop before hands; hands develop before fingers.
neurons Specialized nerve cells that receive and transmit neural impulses and are the building blocks of the brain.
maturation The sequence of biological changes in children giving the child new abilities, which is based on their genetics.
synapses Connections between nerve cells that pass messages in the brain
plasticity The ability of an infants brain to change according to stimulation.
cortisol A steroid hormone that is produced when the body is under stress
windows of opportunity A specific span of time for the normal development of certain types of skills
