proximodistal principle Principle noting that development of the body occurs in an outward direction. The spinal cord develops before outer parts of the body; arms develop before hands; hands develop before fingers.

neurons Specialized nerve cells that receive and transmit neural impulses and are the building blocks of the brain.

maturation The sequence of biological changes in children giving the child new abilities, which is based on their genetics.

synapses Connections between nerve cells that pass messages in the brain

plasticity The ability of an infants brain to change according to stimulation.

cortisol A steroid hormone that is produced when the body is under stress

