The Underrated Companies To Follow In The Common Houseplants Industry
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive outdoors can be grown indoors. Indoors, several palms thrive, including the robustly tolerant parlour and the elegant paradise palm.

Pothos and some varieties (such as the Crotons that have variegated) are easy to grow and have attractive foliage. Orchids need bright light and constant watering. However it is important to let the soil dry slightly between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroids form a large family that includes a lot of the most popular plants that we have in our homes today. Monocotyledonous, many species are prized more for their leaves than their flowers. They are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and growth habits. They also come in many colors. These include monstera, philodendrons and anthuriums and colocasia.

These plants are typically exposed to dappled sunlight, so they thrive in light indirect to moderate light in the home. They can tolerate lower lighting conditions, like a window facing towards the north (just ensure that the sun doesn't directly shine on the leaves).

Most of these plants thrive in humid, warm climates. Place them in a container with a well-drained soil and an potting mix that provides good aeration. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering. Make sure you check the top 2 inches regularly. In excess watering, they can lose their shape, wilt or develop dark brown, soft patches.

Bromeliads

The plants in the bromeliad family have a distinct characteristic that allows them to store water in their leaves or in a cup at the base of the plant. They also release water when they need it through trichomes. They are among the plants that are most drought-tolerant. However, they still benefit from misting on occasion.

Some, like the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are cultivated for their vibrant foliage which could include spots, stripes or bands of color. Some species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea produce spikes of vibrantly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads can be used indoors year-round, while others require moving outdoors during the warmer months when temperatures are above freezing. At the Safari Park, we can see bromeliads thriving in our Hidden Jungle garden. The family Guzmania contains a variety of tropical plants, including the pineapple (Ananas Comosus), introduced to Europe in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the New World.

Cacti

Cacti are a favorite choice for many people to bring into their homes. These special plants are adapted to desert conditions and most species have spiny stems. They also produce flowers and fruits. The spines serve a function to deter herbivores from eating the leaves and fruits.

Like other desert-adapted plants, Cacti can store water in their stems and roots for periods of drought. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide during the day and release it through photosynthesis, which produces food for the plant.

In Central and South America, some cacti such as the cholla, and the prickly-pear (Opuntia), are used to create living fences. Certain cacti, including Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote), are used for their hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most popular houseplants you'll see despite the fact that they don't have flowers and fruit. However, they're easy to cultivate. The key to success is a properly-drained growing medium that resembles the forest floor (rich in organic matter, but with coarse gravel or perlite to ensure proper drainage).

A fern needs to be misted regularly based on its needs. They love the humidity of living spaces and family spaces, but If you notice the fronds turning brown or dropping leaves, this could be a sign of low humidity.

To prevent water logging or root rot, the soil needs to be evenly moistened but not soaking wet. To test the fern's moisture simply place your finger into the soil. It should feel damp, but not wet. Avoid overwatering since this can cause yellowing on the fronds. Avoid direct contact with sunlight and radiators as they dry out the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Begonias are a wonderful option to add color and a sense of vibrancy to your indoor space, whether you display them in a decorative container or a macrame container or even in a garden. They thrive in indirect, bright light and require lots of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low maintenance plants that are easy to cultivate. The 'Dragon Wing' series is the best-known, with blooms in pink, scarlet and yellow, all on dark-bronze and green foliage. For a smaller version, try the 'Baby Wing' series, which grows to 12 to 15 inches tall.

Polka dot begonias are often sold as taller than 4 feet floor plants, and they are beautiful with beautiful leaves and Polka-dot patterns on both sides. They require regular watering and a bi-monthly feeding with liquid fertilizer. Make sure you check the moisture content of the soil on a regular basis because they are susceptible to wilt when the soil is too dried out. The begonias don't have a preference for soil, but they will benefit from a fast draining light mix, such as African Violet potting soil or one specifically designed for house plant s.

Palms

Palms add a tropical feel to the house, and are frequently used in indoor gardens. common house plants are easy to maintain and can be an attractive focal point in any room. They are hardy but can be killed by cold temperatures. They are best kept in the garage in winter or in a protected area inside the home.

Palm leaves are also referred to as palmate or pinnate and are V-shaped. The leaflets overlap or are joined together across their entire length. They are attached to a costa which extends from the petiole of the leaf blade.

Many palm species are harvested for their fruit and wood. They are also used for shade in warm areas and also as indoor plants when a tropical look is desired. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is used as a plantation for coffee and for its edible fruit, while the tagua palm Phytelephas Aequatorialis is used to produce vegetable ivory and Rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, commonly known as umbrella plants or octopus plants are one of the most common types of house plant s. They are easy to grow and don't need much or any kind of coddling.

Scheffleras can survive in medium-light but do best in indirect light that is bright. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight could cause burning of the leaves. Lack of light can make the plant stiff and floppy.

Regular watering is important but don't overwater. Overwatering may cause root rot. When repotting, make sure to use the container that is only a little larger than the original pot; the over-sized pot could result in too much soil that remains moist for too long.

Keep on the lookout for pests like aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. If pests are detected remove them by pinching them or treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like neem oil. If you notice that your leaves are becoming wilted the leaves, it could be due to a lack of moisture or temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias is a native of the subtropical islands of the Pacific, literally means "lots" of shade. This plant is a perfect match for that description. It is a stunning plant with a twisting stem and beautiful leaves. It is a wonderful houseplant for creating a relaxing atmosphere. The leaves are a source of medicinal benefits and are used as a tonic, diuretic, antitoxin, and to treat coughs, fevers and colds. The leaves possess anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Studies have also revealed that they have eight new saponins derived from oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place your Polyscias at an area that is sunny but does not expose the leaves to direct sunlight, since this can scorch them. Water the soil when it dries up however, do not overwater. This can cause root rot, and possibly leaf dropping. Fertilise best house plants with an item that says "feed" every four waterings during the summer. Reduce feeding to every six waters in the winter and autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons can be grown easily, making them an excellent option for new and novice gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron, hederaceum5, is quick-growing and tolerant of different light conditions, thriving as a hanging basket, or climbing up a trellis in frost-free areas and happily spreading its heart-shaped leaves across a desk or bedroom window sill inside.

To make a bold statement in your room, Try the cultivar 'Congo Roca with leaves that are elliptical in a dark shade brown purple. Its unique color emphasizes its sculptural appearance and is ideal for modern rooms with modern furniture or ones decorated in black. Make sure that the philodendrons are located in a bright spot with indirect sunlight, and avoid giving them too much water. Overwatering can cause leaf edge yellowing and a slowdown in growth. Always use lukewarm water and then add plant food using water-diluted solutions, as opposed to directly into the soil. Directly watering the soil could also shock philodendrons, and result in their loss of health.
