The invention of the jackhammer is credited to William Mcreavy and Charles Brady King, who combined a hammer and chisel together to form one convenient tool. Traditionally used on pavements, these machines come in various sizes, with hand-held models relying on either air or electric power sources to do their job. Heavier-duty devices are wheeled and take advantage of more powerful engines, allowing them to tackle even harder tasks.

The chisel, designed with a pointed end and a flat head, is snuggly placed into the jackhammer. At the press of a button, the piston's rapid movement makes the chisel smash against whatever needs to be cut or drilled, each strike creating small dents that eventually break-up asphalt or concrete.

Jackhammers are usually employed to demolish concrete, asphalt, and rock. However, pneumatic hammer drill hilti can also be utilized for other services, such as the destruction of structures, driving metal poles into the ground, or compacting material.
