بواسیر یا هموروئید به سیاهرگ های متورم مقعد و پایین رکتوم گفته می شود که شبیه به رگ های واریسی هستند. هموروئید می تواند در داخل راست روده (بواسیر داخلی) یا زیر پوست اطراف مقعد (بواسیر خارجی) ایجاد شود. هموروئید یک بیماری شایع است که بسیاری از افراد را درگیر می کند و می تواند داخلی یا خارجی باشد. هموروئید خارجی یک سیاهرگ متورم است که در قسمت تحتانی رکتوم یا مقعد، درست زیر پوست اطراف مقعد قرار دارد.
بواسیر خارجی معمولاً دردناک تر از هموروئید داخلی است زیرا در ناحیه ای که ایجاد می شود عصب های بیشتری وجود دارد و می تواند توسط لباس یا عوامل دیگر تحریک شود. از جمله دلایل ایجاد بواسیر خارجی :
زور زدن در هنگام اجابت مزاج، بارداری، چاقی، نشستن طولانی مدت و یبوست یا اسهال مزمن می باشد.
