Easy-Care House Plants
These easy-care plants will add lush greenery to any area. These plants are easy to cultivate and require minimal maintenance. They only need an occasional watering.
These common house plants, ranging from the popular orchids found in big-box stores to the robust and tough ficus, will add a touch of elegance to your indoor gardening design. Additionally, they cleanse your air.
1. Areca Palm
Palms make great house plants because they are easy to care for and add a tropical touch to any home. The Areca Palm, also known as the Bamboo Palm or Butterfly Palm is native to Madagascar. It grows in the wild on slightly acidic soil and topsoil that is rocky or sandy. It is also known as the bamboo palm golden cane palm or butterfly palm. It has a smooth, silver-green trunk with feathery fronds.
Areca Palms excel at bringing humidity into the home and are efficient air purifiers, which remove contaminants and toxins from the atmosphere. The vast surface area of the fronds permits them to naturally give more oxygen than plants with smaller leaves.
They are tolerant of the majority of conditions, but thrive in hot temperatures and constant humidity that is similar to those in the tropics. They can be grown outside in USDA hardiness zones 10 and up with a maximum of 30 feet tall at maturity.
To reproduce the plant, gently break off five or four stems with a sharp knife. Put the fronds you have separated in a pot using two-to-one mix of regular soil and coarse sand and make sure to water them thoroughly. Let good house plants before watering again. In general, palms prefer to be constantly moist but they can tolerate some dryness after they are established.
2. Spider Plant
Spider plants (Chlorophytum Comosum) are a beautiful house plant that can be grown in hanging baskets and normal pots. They look stunning when mature and are positioned in a high location where their long shoots embellished with'babies' of plants can be observed. They are also excellent plants to display in conservatories or similar where the'babies' of the plant can hang freely.
This is a plant that is very adaptable that can flourish in a dim light, however bright indirect sunlight will enhance the colour and growth of the leaves. It is a plant that can be adapted to a variety of conditions and can tolerate some harsh direct sunlight in summer but not in the middle of the day which can cause scorching of the leaves. Watering is fairly simple as the plant does not require much water, but it is essential to avoid over watering so feel the soil and only water it when it appears dry. During the Winter, watering should be reduced to stop the plants from drying out too fast.
The spider plant is an excellent air purifier and helps to remove toxins from the environment such as formaldehyde, toluene and xylene. These are commonly found in homes offices, buildings, and homes. They also reduce allergies by removing pollen, dust mites, and pet dust. This makes the spider plant a great option for people suffering from chronic hay fever or asthma. It's also a non-toxic plant, which means it's safe for pets and children!
3. Fiddle Leaf Fig
The fiddle leaf fig, also known as ficus lyrata is well-known for its striking wavy leaves. It's an excellent choice to create a lush forest feel within your home. This plant can be the centerpiece of a room and looks stunning against white or neutral walls. Fiddle leaf figs can also look great in contemporary or farmhouse styles, where their size and shape contribute to the overall look.
Because it is a tropical species, it requires bright, well-filtered light to grow and appear its best. Direct sunlight can cause burns to the leaves and decrease their color. Fiddle leaf figs can be able to be trained into an a-tree or a bush shape. A bush-like shape is usually the default, but pruning can be performed to encourage branching, and a more tree-like appearance.
Fiddle leaf figs grow in rainforests and thrive in humid and warm conditions that are similar to greenhouses. Misting the plant regularly is recommended to help mimic the same environment at home. Additionally, repotting the plant on a biweekly basis helps with the plants growth and health.
This houseplant is relatively easy to maintain, however it requires constant care and affection in the form of food as well as water and sun. This consistency is hard to maintain, especially if you find yourself in a middle. It is best to pick a spot for your plant in which you are able to commit and stay there.
4. Rubber Plant
Ficus elastica, also known as the Rubber Plant or Rubber Fig is another common and fashionable house plant. It has gorgeous glossy green leaves and it is believed that it cleanses the air by eliminating pollutants such as formaldehyde from the air.
It is a simple-to-care for plant that is forgiving in lighting levels and other conditions in the home. However, it can be quite sensitive and will shed its leaves if the conditions are not right. For instance, a lower leaf growth could be an indication of inadequate light levels. This can be resolved by moving the plant closer to a window or using the use of a grow lamp.
This is a great plant for beginners learning how to care for plants. It is also among the most simple house plants to propagate. It is possible to propagate rubber plants by cutting the stem and packing some damp moss on the top. When the plant has begun to grow it is possible to remove all of the moss. Then, you can plant it in a pot using ficus pots and potting mix. It is essential to keep the soil moist but not too wet. You should also clean the leaves frequently. This will help to prevent fungal disease and encourage the plant to absorb more sunlight. If you prefer, you can spray the plant with a mister. However, dripping wet leaves can cause staining to furniture and carpets.
5. English Ivy
English ivy (Hedera helix) is an evergreen vine that is commonly used as a house plant because of its greenery all year. It is also a good climber for trees and walls and provides privacy screening. If you do not want a climbing plant that spreads all over your home there are many ivy that are less aggressive lookalikes to consider such as pothos or the philodendron.
Be aware that English ivy can choke out tree trunks when it becomes too heavy, which limits the health of the wood and increases the risk of fungal decay and diseases. It can also cause damage to the bark of mature trees during storms because it pulls and sticks to them.
The plant is attractive by itself. There are a variety of cultivars, including those with all shades of green as well as variegated varieties in white, yellow and gray. Some of these include 'Itsybitsy' that has tiny leaves that look like ivy 'Congesta', which has two-sided heart-shaped, two-sided or triangular leaf lobes 'Diana' and 'Fluffy Ruffles and 'Fluffy Ruffles', which have bird's foot shaped leaves with narrow lobes; 'Curlilocks' as well as Gold Child, which have large curly leaves that are wavy or wavier; and 'Silvery Variety' and 'Glacier', which have silvery variegations.
Ivy plants prefer cool indirect light and well-draining soil. Protect the foliage from heat vents, drafts and excessive watering. Misting the plants regularly will prevent dryness and helps to keep away spider mites. If you find these bugs, treat them in the same way as other common houseplant bugs such as mealybugs and aphids. Neem oil and insecticidal soap are excellent solutions for these pests.
6. Kalanchoe
The Kalanchoe plant (KAL- n-KOH-t It is a succulent that blooms that requires minimal care. Its lengthy period of reblooming is what makes it popular with florists and other houseplant lovers who use it as centerpieces and dishgardens. It is a fantastic gift, as it often reblooms years after the initial display.
Like many flowering plants, like many others, love bright light and a good drain. Allow the soil to completely dry between waterings in order to avoid water spots. Do not let kalanchoes sit in standing water since this can cause root rot. Use potting mix and pots that drain quickly when watering kalanchoes.
To encourage reblooming, you can try giving the kalanchoe lower light levels that simulate short days, just like you would with a poinsettia or Thanksgiving Cactus. Do this for about a month and it should start to bloom again.
Like most flowering plants need regular fertilizer. It is best to use a balanced mix that is water-soluble. Most potting mixes include some nutrients. However, it is best to feed your plant every month from spring through autumn. The excess moisture should be poured out of a saucer set beneath the pot. You should mist the leaves of a kalanchoe instead of spraying them directly. This is because letting the leaves get wet could trigger the fungal infection known as Fusarium or Rhizoctonia root rot.
