Types of House Plants
Croton is an attractive indoor plant with its emerald-green leaves which are flecked in pink and orange. It tolerates lower light levels than most other plants and requires little water. It can also assist in removing formaldehyde out of the air.
Pothos with its slim, heart-shaped leaves, is another easy house plant to grow. It can thrive in dim light, but prefers bright indirect sun and regular watering.
Aroids
Many common house plants like monsteras, philodendrons and ZZ plants belong to the Aroid family (Araceae). The swamp dwellers of the past, this group of plants thrives as indoor plants for long periods of time because they're easy to care for.
They require a moderate amount of light and warm temperatures as well as high humidity. During the growing season they also need fertilizer. Aroids are admired for their diverse foliage and their ability to tolerate both bright and low light conditions. They bloom less often than other plants in the house, but when they do, they're generally spectacular, said Schiavone. Aroid flowers are characterized by spathes, which is a petal-like structure that attracts pollinators, and a spadix which is the actual flower or inflorescence. The flowers have a sweet smell and are heated to increase the volume of chemicals that attract pollinators.
You may have seen aroids in Instagram posts as well as movie backgrounds and curtain designs. These plants are stylish and easy to grow, which is why they have become a standard in the collection of house plants. The tropical aroids such as Monstera deliciosa (also called the Swiss cheese plant) are available in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes. This aroid has a reputable Feng-Shui name because it wards off negative energies. It is easy to grow and is ideal for those who are just beginning or want to add drama to their home decor.
Bromeliads
Bromeliads look exotic however they are easy to cultivate. This epiphyte, or air plant, doesn't require soil and can be glued to trees, be glued to objects, or be planted in soil that is shallow. Its vibrant colors and fascinating textures make this a popular ornamental plant. It is also a low-maintenance garden that is resistant to severe pests.
The bromeliad genus has many cultivars and species that are suitable for house plants, ranging from sword-shaped, spiky leaves of Aechmea to the vibrantly colored bracts and flowers of Billbergia and Neoregelia. The most widely used cultivars include the speckled, red-centered 'Guinea' as well as the broad-leafed Morado, a pink-centered flower. They typically bloom in late summer or fall and their beautiful bracts can last for several months.
As houseplants, they are often planted in a potting mix. However, some of the more tropical species like Guzmani and Tillandsia are stuck to logs and moss or nested in coconut shells and don't require soil at all. As house plants, they are generally placed in a potting mix. However, certain species from the tropical zone such as Tillandsia and Guzmani do not require soil and can be glued directly to logs using moss.
Bromeliads are tolerant of drought better than many indoor plants. However, they still require regular watering. Water them every week in warmer weather, and twice a month in cooler temperatures. They can be fertilized regularly with a well-draining potting mix such as palm or orchid potting mix.
good house plants are one of the most durable and robust of all the house plants. They range from squat, spiny forms to tall and lanky columns or even thorny ornamental balls. Many cacti are native to desert habitats but they grow well in containers in a variety. Some bloom infrequently and require special attention to keep them healthy.
They can also trap and reflect light. They may also have scales. Dinosaur Back Plant thorns (Mammillaria Hahniana) can grow up to 36 inches in height.
The Candelabra Cactus's pads that resemble fingers are covered in spines at regular intervals, giving it an attractive shape. This plant is suitable for indoor cultivation and produces white flowers in the summer and spring.
The Fairy Castle Cactus (Morenoa cristata) has multiple stems that are reminiscent of the spires and turrets of castles. The cactus can grow to 6 feet (2 meters) in the wild and flowers at night. This cactus requires bright, filtered sunlight. It must be kept in a place with good circulation and a temperature that is warm. It can be affected by drafts and cause it to shrivel. This cactus must be repotted annually or more often if the container gets too small. This is a great plant for novices, since it doesn't require any water or fertilizer. The spines also discourage pets and children from eating it.
Ferns
Ferns are easy to grow as indoor plants, and they provide a tropical look. In nature, ferns thrive in shade beneath tree canopies. But, they require some light to thrive indoors. Plant ferns in moderate or indirect light and avoid windows that face either west or south, which can cause them to scorch.
Pinnae are the leaflets of a variety of ferns. They are available in a variety of sizes and configurations making it simple to identify species. They also have a unique vascular structure, where the protoxylem is limited to the xylem's lobes. This is similar to the cell that conducts water in other plants. best houseplants enables ferns to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.
Most Ferns have tiny hairs, known as trichomes, which protect them from predators. The hairs may be glandular, unicellular, or multicellular, and release toxic fluids, odors and fragrances, or produce waxy substances to give fronds a shiny and vibrant color.
They don't require much water, and they can benefit from drying between waterings. Overwatering can cause the fronds to turn brown or yellow and could cause root rot. If your ferns appear to dry out too fast, try misting them more frequently or placing them on a pebble tray with water. A humidifier could also be helpful when your home is dry.
Succulents
Succulents are popular houseplants because they can thrive in different climates. They thrive in deserts, on cliffs by the sea and in humid forests in the wild.
There are a myriad of species of succulents each with its own distinct appearance and needs. However, they all have characteristics like fleshy leaves or stems which are used to store water, smaller roots than other types, and a rosette-like arrangement of leaves. They are also more drought-resistant than other species. However, they may not take direct sunlight.
Aloe vera is a popular succulent, is well-known. This common household plant can grow quite large and will occasionally produce bell-shaped flowers. Snake plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata) is a common succulent is a tall and attractive interest to any space. tall house plants are simple to grow from stem or leaf cuttings, which will need to be callused before they can be planted.
Another succulent that looks stunning in a wall basket is the agave blue-glowing. Its vibrantly colored foliage is a welcome accent in any home, and it is very easy to care for. Like all succulents, it requires light filtered and slightly humid soil. It is advisable to stay clear of overwatering in winter, since this could cause rot.
Woody Evergreens
The majority of woody plants with leaves that are evergreen are conifers, such as pines and spruces, or deciduous trees or shrubs, like junipers (Juniperus) and arborvitaes (Arborvitae). The latter two have needle-shaped foliage. Woody evergreens are surrounded by a toughened, swollen tissue called bark. This is made of a substance called the xylem. It transports water and nutrients through the plant.
Some woody evergreens are popular houseplants because they don't need much maintenance. The money tree, Pachira aquatica, is one of the best examples. The leaves, which are braided, are topped with a rosette that is made of white-striped, leathery-green foliage. The plant grows quickly and will reach around eight feet tall within a decade or so.
A dracaena or dragon trees is another low-maintenance alternative. Dracaena marginata from Madagascar is a low-maintenance alternative. It is a twisted plant with rosettes of glossy, narrow leaves. Dracaena Sanderiana, also known as the ribbon plant, has sword-shaped shiny green leaves that have white stripes.
Many other woody evergreens also make excellent houseplants. They include schefflera, which has typical broad-leafed foliage, ficus, aka banyan tree, whose fronds grow to several feet high; and the false castor plant, or Philodendron deliciosum with its beautiful heart-shaped leaves that are cut into lobes. All require a large pot and bright indirect sunlight. In general, evergreens are more hardy than deciduous plants, but they can be damaged by freezing temperatures.
