Easy House Plants
A monstera with glossy leaves and a contemporary pot will add a touch of class to any corner. It's undemanding and happy to be rooted and reducing the need for repotting.
A good match between plants and the right lighting conditions is vital. Avoid houseplants with drooping leaves and soil that is sloppy or with soft roots since they could be unsalvageable and could be a breeding ground for diseases.
Pothos
Pothos, also called Devil's Ivy or Rapunzel plant, is one of the easiest to care for plant species for foliage. It thrives in light to low indirect light and is great for filling dark spots of a room. It is tolerant to all conditions, including direct sunlight as long as it's not prolonged. However, if it gets too much sunlight, it could get swollen and lose its variegation.
Pothos can be propagated from a stem cutting. Simply cut common house plant from the vine and remove two leaves down to about 2"-3". Then, put it in a vase of water. It will start growing roots very quickly. Make sure to change the water regularly, ideally every two weeks. It will establish roots in either water, or potting soil. Once the root system has been established (usually within four weeks) it is possible to transfer it into a pot using regular pots of soil for houseplants.
Pothos, like all houseplants, needs good general houseplant fertiliser to ensure its health. However, it doesn't require fertilization as frequently as most other houseplants. A feeding every month during spring and summer months should suffice.
indoor house plants may turn brown and shriveled when placed in areas that are drafty or near radiators. Place the plant in a more brightly lit space of your home, and fertilize it as usual.
The leaves of the Pothos will tell you whether it needs watering. It's time to water it if the edges of the leaves have become dry and brown. If the leaves begin to droop and drop, it's time to water them.
Epipremnum (Pothos) is a variety of heart-shaped leaves available in green, white or yellow, is available. common house plant are "Marble Queen" which is striking white and green variegation. Another variety that is popular is "Neon," which has green leaves that have red and yellow markings.
Pothos can live up to 10 years if provided with the right conditions. Basic maintenance and good environmental care can help extend the life span of this plant. It is also extremely easy to propagate making it a great option for people who are new to gardening.
Monstera
Monstera Deliciciosa is also referred to as the Swiss cheese plant or split-leaf Philodendron. It is a common indoor houseplant found in temperate climates. It can also be grown outdoors in warm climates and is a very popular landscape plant. It is a moderately greedy plant and needs to be watered sporadically to keep the soil dry.
The monstera, a species of the Dracaena family is named for its odd-looking leaves with a strange pattern of holes. It resembles Swiss cheese. These lobes and holes known as fenestrations appear on the leaves as they mature. Monstera Deliciciosa plants produce fruit in the wild, but it's difficult for the plant to bear fruit in average indoor home conditions.
Unlike most succulents, Monsteras are not able to thrive in cold temperatures. They will die in temperatures that are colder than a few hours. They prefer warm, tropical temperatures similar to their rainforest habitats. This makes them a great choice for a conservatory or another sunny spot that's cool enough to avoid freezing and frost.
Monsteras are a kind of vine that uses aerial roots to grow through the soil. In the wild they will often grow along the forest floor and then attach themselves to trees or rocks. This is why many owners of plants attach a trellis in their pots once the plant grows.
The moss rod, which is constructed from chicken wire or sphagnum with long-strands, will support the plants and allow them to climb up instead of escaping from their pot. The pole can also help to keep away pests such as sap-sucking mealybugs and aphids as well as tiny thrips that resemble cigars which can cause damage to the leaves of the plant.
Repot the plant frequently and provide it with plenty of indirect bright sunlight. It can tolerate some direct light however, it shouldn't be exposed to direct sunlight from dawn until dusk. If exposed to direct sunlight the monstera could burn its leaves and even die.
ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas, also known as ZZ plant or the ZZ plant, is one of the easiest plants to maintain. It is a good choice for darker areas of the house where other plants aren't able to thrive. ZZ plants can grow to a height of up to one metre, and are best suited to larger plant stands and pots.
The ZZ plant's most significant disadvantage is that it can be poisonous when consumed, therefore, keep it away from nibbling pets and children. It can also cause irritation to the skin, so be sure to wear gloves when handling it. It is believed that it causes cancer, but this has not been proven.
ZZ plants, as with all succulents are easy to care for and grow. They don't require a great deal of water, however they should be well watered. It is essential to let the soil dry between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it's recommended to stay on the side of not needing more.
They thrive best in a rich, free-draining potting mix that has some added perlite or sand to improve drainage. The plant is not an instant grower and can be kept in the same pot for a long time. However they will require to be replanted when they begin to poke their way through the soil.
Fertilize during the growing seasons with half-strength liquid fertilizer. In the warmer months, this is usually repeated once or twice a month.
Like any indoor plant, be sure to check for insects such as Aphids on a regular basis. Be on the lookout for stems with spindly leaves that are leggy and long, and yellow patterns or spots on the leaves (see photo above). The leaves are also prone to rot and mold, so don't overlook these signs and let them get out of hand.
The plants require a small amount of humidity, but are fine in most normal temperatures in the house. The leaves will be dust-free by misting them frequently. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but it also helps them function as air purifying plants.
Kentia Palm
A stunning and easy to maintain plant, the kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) has been in vogue since the Victorian era and was a staple house plant in many royal and aristocratic households. This is due to its ability to thrive in harsh conditions, such as the lack of sunlight exposure, air conditioning and central heating. It is also tolerant to neglect, making it an ideal option for those who are just starting out.
Kentias like direct, bright light and can tolerate some shade but it's best to keep them from direct sunlight since this could cause scorching of the leaves. They also dislike draughty spots so don't place them close to windows that are often open and closed.
The kentia requires a soil mixture that is rich in nutrients and drains well. A mixture of perlite, peat and potting soil can be a good planting medium. Plant common houseplant in a pot with drainage holes. Water thoroughly whenever the top centimetres of compost is dry. Overwatering can cause root rot. It's best to let the soil air dry before watering.
You can trim your kentia to maintain its shape and shape, and also remove dead leaves that appear. Pruning should be carried out with care as too many fronds cut can cause damage to the trunk and leave the plant open to infection. If you choose to prune, use shears that have a smooth cutting surface and remove the leaf bases from their base instead of pushing them away. This could leave permanent scars.
A kentia may be vulnerable to insects such as spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. Cleaning the fronds frequently using a sponge or cloth can help to prevent this issue. If they do, spray the plant with insecticidal oil or soap.
