Are The Advances In Technology Making Common Houseplants Better Or Worse?
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be cultivated indoors. Several palms, including the sturdily tolerant parlour palm and the beautiful paradise palm, are thriving in indoors.

Pothos and certain varieties (such as the Crotons that have variegated) are easy to cultivate and have beautiful foliage. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant watering. However you should let the soil dry slightly between waterings.

Aroids

The aroid family is huge and includes many of the most sought-after houseplants of the present. Monocotyledonous, many species are more appreciated for their leaves than their flowers. They grow in a wide range of sizes, shapes and growth patterns and come in a variety of colors as well. They include monstera, philodendrons and anthuriums and colocasia.

These understory plants typically receive dappled sunlight, so they thrive in bright indirect light inside the home. They can be tolerant of less lighting conditions, like a window facing north (just ensure that the sun isn't directly shining on the leaves).

Most of these plants do best in warm, moist climates. Use a potting mix with good aeration and well-draining soil in the container. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering, so make sure you make sure to check the top 2 inches of soil often. They can lose their shape, wilt or develop dark brown mushily-colored spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

The plants in the bromeliad family have a unique characteristic that allows them to store water in their leaves or in a cup at the base of the plant. They also release water when needed through trichomes. They are one of the plants that are most drought-tolerant. However, they do benefit from misting periodically.

Some, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are cultivated for their vibrant foliage which may include spots, stripes, or bands of color. Certain species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea produce spikes of brightly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads can be used all year round, while others need to be moved outdoors during warmer months when temperatures are above freezing. At the Safari Park, we see bromeliads growing in our Hidden Jungle garden. The Genus Guzmania includes a variety of tropical plants which include the pineapple (Ananas comosus) which was introduced to Europe after Columbus' second trip to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a popular choice for many to bring into their homes. These unique plants are adapted to desert conditions and a majority have spiny stems. They also produce flowers and fruit. The spines serve a purpose as they deter herbivores, which might otherwise eat leaves and fruits.

As with other desert-adapted species, cacti can store water in their roots and stems during periods of drought. They also store carbon dioxide in their stomata throughout the day and release it when photosynthesis happens.

In Central and South America, some cacti such as the cholla, and the prickly-pear (Opuntia) are used to build living fences. Others, like Lophophora williamsii (cactus peyote) have been used for their hallucinogenic properties.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most common indoor plants, despite the absence of flowers and fruits. Despite their lack of fruits and flowers they are easy to cultivate. The key to success lies in the growing medium that resembles the forest floor. This should be rich in organic matter but also have perlite or coarse gravel, for proper drainage.

A fern's needs should determine the frequency at which it gets misted. They like the humidity in living rooms and family areas, but when the fronds begin to turn brown or have their leaves falling off this is an indication that the humidity is not enough.

To avoid water logging or root rot, the soil should be evenly moist, but not soggy. To test the fern's moisture, simply stick your finger into the soil. It should feel moist to the touch, but not wet. Avoid overwatering, as it may cause the fronds to yellow. Avoid direct contact with the sun and radiators since they will dry out the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Begonias are a wonderful way to add color and a sense of vibrancy to your indoor space, whether you put them in a vase, a macrame basket, or even in a garden. They thrive in indirect, bright light but require a good amount of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low maintenance plants that are easy to grow. The 'Dragon Wing' series is the most well-known, featuring blooms in pink, scarlet, yellow and apricot on green to dark-bronze foliage. For a smaller version, try the 'Baby Wing' variety that can grow to 12 to 15 inches tall.

Polka dot begonias are usually sold as taller than 4 feet floor plants. They are beautiful with beautiful leaves and Polka-dot patterns on both sides. They require regular watering, and a monthly application of liquid fertilizer. They can wilt if the soil is too dry, so make sure you check the level of moisture regularly. The begonias don't have a preference for soil, but they can benefit from a fast draining light mix, like African Violet potting soil or one specifically designed for house plants.

Palms

Palms bring a tropical vibe to your home, and are frequently used in indoor gardens. They are easy to care for and can be the focal point of any room. They are tough, but they can be damaged by cold temperatures, which is why they should be placed in the garage or protected in the house during winter.

Palm leaves are also called palmate or pinnate and are shaped as a V. The leaflets are joined together or overlapped for part or all of their length and are attached along a costa, which is a extension of the petiole into the leaf blade.

Many species of palms are harvested for their fruits and timber. Palms are used as shade trees in warmer climates and indoor plants for the tropical look. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is grown as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, while the tagua palm Phytelephas Aequatorialis is used to produce vegetable ivory and Rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, also known as umbrella plants or octopus plants are one of the most common types of houseplants. They are easy to grow and don't require a lot or any kind of coddling.

Although common houseplants can be thriving in light conditions, scheffleras do best with bright indirect light. Exposure to direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Insufficient light can make the plant stiff and floppy.

Regular watering is important, but do not overwater. Overwatering could cause root rot. When repotting, make low light houseplants to use containers that are only slightly larger than the pot that was originally used; an oversize pot will result in a lot of soil that remains moist for too long.

Watch out for pests such as aphids and spider mites. If pests are detected take them off and treat the plants with a natural insecticide such as neem oil. If the leaves begin to turn brown, it's due to the lack of moisture or an extreme temperature.

Polyscias

Polyscias which is native to the subtropical islands of the Pacific is literally "lots" of shade. This plant is a perfect match for that description. It is a stunning plant with a twisted stem and gorgeous leaves. It is a great houseplant for creating a relaxing atmosphere. The leaves contain medicinal properties and are utilized as a tonic diuretic, antitoxin and to treat coughs, fevers and colds. The leaves have anti-inflammatory properties, antifungal and antibacterial ones. Studies have also found that they contain eight new saponins derived from oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place your Polyscias in a shaded area that does not present direct sunlight on the leaves, since this could cause them to be burned. Water the soil when it has dried, but do not overwater. This can cause root rot, and possibly leaf drop. Fertilise your houseplant with a labeled feed every four waterings in summer months, but cut down to every six in autumn and winter.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are one of the easiest houseplants to grow and are an ideal choice for novice or beginner gardeners. common house plant trailing Philodendron hederaceum5 adjusts to different light conditions and grows quickly. It can be grown in a hanging pot, or Trellis outside in areas that are not frosty, or spread its heart-shaped foliage across a desk and bedroom window sill inside.

Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has leaves that are elliptical in a dark brown purple shade. Its unique color highlights its sculptural form and is ideal for modern spaces with modern furniture or ones decorated in black. Make sure that the philodendrons are located in a sunny spot with indirect sunlight, and avoid giving them too much water. Overwatering can result in leaf edge yellowing and slowing growth. Use diluted, lukewarm water to feed the plant instead of directly putting it into the soil. Directly watering the soil can also shock philodendrons and cause them to lose health.
