Your Worst Nightmare Concerning House Plants Be Realized
Large House Plants and Trees

The addition of tall trees and plants to your home or office is a bold statement. They also purify the air and boost concentration and productivity.

These tall plants and trees are easy to care for. They can tolerate low levels of sunlight but thrive in bright, intense light. The overwatering of roots can cause root rot.

African Fig Tree

The African Fig Tree (Ficus Cyathistipula) is an extremely fast-growing house plant from central Africa that is known for its long, rounded leaves. It's an excellent choice when you have an area facing north, since it can help to keep the air cool or conditioned and can also aid in reducing the humidity levels.

It is a very easy to grow plant that can endure drought conditions. It thrives best in indirect bright light and a warm average temperature is optimal. However, it is sensitive to cold draughts and should be protected. Avoid over-watering and using low-quality chlorine-free water. Reduce the frequency of watering in the winter months.

You can fertilize the African Fig Tree every 2-3 weeks with a liquid, balanced houseplant feed. Repotted at small house plants of the growing period or when it is pot bound. Repotting is not recommended during winter since it can result in stress to the plant, which can result in leaf loss. Contrary to other houseplants the fig is not prone to disease and pests. It is susceptible to mealy bugs, and other pests.

Yukka Plant

Yucca plants are common in areas of extreme drought, such as the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Evergreens, they can last for hundreds of years. They come in many shapes and shades. The two most common kinds of yucca utilized as large plants for the home are the Adam's Needle (Y. filamentosa) and the Spanish Bayonet (Y. aloifolia). Both have trunks with thin branches that can reach as high as 15 feet tall, as well as stiff leaves tipped with tough points that can puncture skin. Yuccas grow slowly and can remain in small containers for a long time.

Cast Iron Plant

The plant made of cast iron (Aspidistra elatior) is an evergreen plant that is able to thrive in shade outdoors or in dimly lit rooms indoors. It has long, slender leaves, and a rhizome that creates new growth underground. It can grow up to three feet high and wide in the open however it is smaller indoors. The leaves are glossy green or bluish, with spots or stripes and may be variegated. The leaves look like asparagus and are part of the same family.

Cast Iron Plants are tolerant of low light, and one of the plants that can live without water for days. It cleans indoor air because it absorbs harmful chemicals such as Formaldehyde.

It is a robust houseplant, but it is not an extremely fast grower. It is recommended to repotte it every three to five years. Repot it in the spring with the potting soil. If you do this, select the size of the container that is a bit larger. It tolerates drought but prefers moderate moisture. Overwatering causes root rot. Water when you don't feel any moisture in the soil with your finger.

Swiss Cheese Plant

The Swiss cheese plant, also known under the name Monstera Deliciosa, is one of the most popular large houseplants because of its striking fenestrated leaves. It is particularly popular with the boho design movement and looks great in most decorating styles. It is a tropical plant that thrives in warm temperatures with bright indirect light.

Watering is simple. It is only necessary to water your plants when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Overwatering can cause root rot. Use a moisture gauge or your finger to measure the soil moisture level and only water when needed. It's also an excellent idea to move the plant away from windows and air vents during the coldest winter months to help keep it warm.

Feed the plant every month with a liquid houseplant food that has a 5-2-3 NPK ratio. Give it a month to fertilize your plant after repotted. This is because roots are more sensitive following repotting.

Bird's Nest Fern

The Bird's Nest Fern is one of the most tropical-looking house plants. It is also called the hanging fern due to its long, curled leaves that resemble bird wings. It's an epiphytic plant which means that it grows on wood or rocks. However it also thrives in soils that are uniformly moist.

They are easy to grow, but beware of bacterial blight, which looks like leaf rot first, but is a serious problem for plants that are in contact with the soil. The symptoms begin with tiny translucent spots that appear water-soaked. They grow as they age and become reddish purple.

To avoid this, put ferns in bright indirect light and shade them as often as you can by sheer curtains. Ferns are an excellent way to add a splash of tropical flair to dark areas of the home such as dormitories and basements. If the fronds begin to turn yellow, this is an indication that there's been too hot air in the room or they've been exposed to the draughts. Misting and running a humidifier are great methods to prevent this.

Rubber Plant

Rubber Plants (Peperomia obtusifolia) are easy-to-care-for plants that thrive at temperatures of all kinds. They are most often utilized as a plant for the home, but can also be grown in the garden. It will tolerate light shade but prefers a spot that is well-lit in the house with indirect sunlight.

The frequency of watering varies depending on the time of year. During summer, soil can dry out very quickly due to intense sunlight. The plant will require less water in winter.

The sap of this plant is rich in caoutchouc, which gives rubber its elasticity. This compound may cause irritation to mucous and skin tissues and can be toxic if consumed. It is best to keep the plant out of the reach of pets and children.

You can trim your plant using Budding knives or sterile shears. However, it is crucial to wear gloves as the latex can irritate the skin and eyes. Rubber plants can be propagated via air-layering. Cut a small portion of the stem you wish to separate from its parent plant. Wrap the wound in plastic and cover it with damp moss.

Heartleaf Philodendron

The Heartleaf Philodendron is an easy-going plant that thrives in a variety of environments. The green vines that trail it make a great feature to any room and also help clean the air. This plant thrives under shade, making it a great choice for darker spaces in the office or at home.

Like all plants, it is essential to water your philodendron frequently. However, you must be sure to avoid overwatering. An excellent indicator of when your plant needs more water is when leaves begin to appear like they are wilting or drooping. This is often a sign that the soil is dry.

The most effective method to propagate philodendrons is to make cuttings to the stem during warmer months. Simply cut the stem into a node and put it in water or a moist soil. After a month or so the plant will begin to develop roots. If this happens the philodendron plant could be relocated to an everlasting container.

Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia is a classic and we love it for its lush foliage, low maintenance requirements and easy care. Native to the tropics, it can adapt well to warm indoor temperatures and thrives in indirect light.

Dieffenbachia can grow in either water or soil, but we prefer a more airy, lighter growing medium, like perlite. (Chunky stones, spongy). The ideal mix is loam and peat, or the ratio of perlite to soil.

Water roots have gills which allow them to extract oxygen from the liquid, in contrast to soil roots, which are unable to breathe underwater. This can lead to root rot. This could have evolved as an adaptation to their natural tropical environment. Be aware that dieffenbachia leaves and roots, as well as sap, are poisonous to pets and humans when they are consumed. Wear gloves when handling the plant and be careful when working with children. The sap's toxins can irritate tongues and throats and cause irritation to the eyes and skin reactions. Avoid contact with the sap and use a mild soap if you have to contact the plant.
