10 Quick Tips About Easy House Plants
Easy House Plants

If you've jumped on the houseplant bandwagon some time ago or are looking for new greenery to fill your living space, there are plenty of plants that are a breeze to cultivate. These houseplants aren't concerned about their surroundings or how much water they get and can bounce back after a little neglect.

The spider plant, for instance, thrives in direct sunlight and only needs to be watered when the top few inches of soil are dry. Peace lilies are another alternative that is low-key and has a pretty pattern on their leaves.

Ponytail Palm

The tropical succulent known as the ponytail palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata) is easy to care for. It doesn't require a lot of water or attention and is therefore a great choice for busy people.

Place the plant near big windows that are unobstructed or in a sun-filled area with medium light. Avoid cold, drafty places and hot windows in these conditions, as they can dry out the leaves.

During the growing season, water the plant only when the soil is dry to the surface. The ponytail palm should be watered during winter is not advised. The plant will be in a dormant state. When watering, make use of a moisture meter to help keep the plant from being overwatered.

The plants grow slowly and don't require trimming unless they get sick. They can tolerate short periods of cooler temperature and drought, however they should be moved into a brighter area in winter. Fertilize them a few times a year, during the spring and the summer. Follow the directions on the label of a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.

Schefflera

The schefflera is among the most popular tropical house plants. It is also known as umbrella plant or the philodendron. It grows 4-6 feet high indoors, and has bright indirect light.

The schrefflera tolerates temperatures that range from warm to medium however, it is not a fan of drafts. It can protest by shedding its leaves. It requires a peat-moss-based pot soil, and is best fed every month with a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer.

If your schefflera is becoming in size, it could be in need of a new pot. It is best placed in a pot that is at least two inches larger than the one it is currently in. This will promote bushy growth. Pinched the tips of growth to encourage the branching.

The schefflera can be affected by spider mites. However, spraying the leaves with Neem oil or insecticidal soap will usually eliminate the mites. It is also susceptible to thrips, but spotting and washing the bugs off the plant with a damp cloth should be enough to get rid of them.

Chinese Evergreen

The aglaonema, or Chinese evergreen, is high on the list of simple house plants. It tolerates a wide range of indoor conditions, from low light to bright spots and fluorescent lighting. It also tolerates cold temperatures, but prefers warm ones.

Humus-rich potting dirt is ideal for this tough, slow-growing plant. Add some peat moss to improve drainage and help acidify the soil. You should water your aglaonema often during the summer but let the soil's top inch dry between waterings.

If your aglaonema is beginning to look sluggish or thin, it could mean it requires more light or it may be pot-bound. Repot it into a container one size larger, loosen the roots that are tangled, and then add fresh pots and potting mix. You can spray the plant with soapy water or Neem oil if it's suffering from insects. There are many varieties to pick from including solid green types such as Aglaonema ‘Frasher’ and Aglaonema ‘Pseudobracteatum’ as well as variegated varieties such as Aglaonema ‘Silver Bay' and Aglaonema ‘Stripes’.

Calathea

This is a very easy care houseplant as compared to its siblings, calathea ornata and whitestar, which can be fussy. The stunning pin-striped leaves of calathea can grow to over a foot tall and are beautiful in bright indirect sunlight.

Calatheas need slightly moist soil but not soggy or wet. If the soil feels dry to your fingers, give the plant a thorough watering. It is recommended to water every two days, but you should inspect the soil on a regular basis to establish the habit of watering. If house plants common potting mix is not as good replace it with a drainage mix comprising one part peat and one part perlite or coco coir. Feed your calatheas with diluted fertilizer for your houseplants twice a month in the spring and summer.

Curled or drooping leaves are indicators of dehydration. They can be corrected by adding water for a few days. Discoloration on the leaves is most likely caused by pests and can be treated by using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachias are simple to care for plants that can add the color of your home. The oblong leaves have diverse patterns of yellow, white and a variety of shades of green and can grow to 12 inches or more.

Like most plants, Dieffenbachias can be susceptible to certain conditions that can affect their health and appearance. The tips of the leaves that are brown can indicate low humidity, whereas yellow leaves could result from excessive watering or submerging. Inconsistent watering or using hard tap water can also cause issues.

If your Dieffenbachia starts to droop Try moving it to a brighter location. Drooping plants are often a sign that they need more water, so test the soil's for moisture by sticking your fingers into it to the first knuckle. Make sure to water the soil thoroughly not just a tiny amount. Be sure to soak the soil in water until excess drains out of the drainage holes. The best container for your Dieffenbachia is a plastic nursery planter, which allows water to drain more efficiently than porous soil.

Peperomia

The peperomia is a low maintenance house plant that is suitable for almost any space in the home. Its dark green shiny leaves are attractive and it also helps to purify the air.

Peperomias prefer moderately-light temperatures and warm temperatures however they do not like direct sunlight. If the leaves are scorched or discolored it is an indication that they're exposed to too much sun and should be moved into a shadier area.

As their wild counterparts do, peperomias are epiphytic plants that attach themselves to tree branches and other tall structures in order to gain access to brighter, indirect sunlight. They thrive in well-drained soil that is dry between waterings. If you notice that the roots of your peperomia are growing out of its pot and are causing problems, it's time to pot it again. Use a general home plant mix that is free of peat, and set it up in a container that is one size bigger than the one currently in use to avoid root rot. Feed your peperomia using a general houseplant fertiliser every month during the summer.

Arrowhead Vine

The Arrowhead vine (Syngoniumpodophyllum), a tropical vine that can be planted indoors, is a leafy climbing plant. It is a good houseplant for novices, since it is easy to propagate.

To make a cut from an existing arrowhead, locate a healthy stem and carefully cut it at the base of the petiole. This job is best done with clean, sterile and sharp hand pruning shears.

Water your arrowheads often particularly in summer. Allow the soil to dry between waterings since arrowhead plants do not prefer a soil that is constantly damp. The winter months are the only time they don't require fertilizer as the plant is dormant. The plant is a source of calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause a burning sensation when consumed, so it's vital to keep it out of reach of pets and children. Also called nephthytis, goosefoot or the philodendron plant, arrowhead vine is a favorite of gardeners at home due to its vibrant foliage and low-maintenance.

Snake Plant

Snake plants, also referred to as Sansevieria, are one of the easiest to cultivate houseplants. They thrive in low light as well as drought and are prone to a few insect problems. The plant can also be used to purify the air in your house. It converts CO2 into oxygen at daytime and removes formaldehyde, benzene and formaldehyde during the night.

Healthy snake plants have strong leaves that are upright and have green leaves with cream, yellow or white edges. Overwatering, lack light or thrips, or root rot may cause leaves to fall.

Repot your snake plants into the container that is two inches bigger in case the roots get too crowded or if the plant grows out of its current pot. Choose a soil with good drainage, and preferably one-third perlite or sand and one-third peat. Fertilize your plants every month with a liquid fertiliser at half strength during the growing season.

Money Plant

Money plants are easy-to-grow and are considered lucky plants that can bring prosperity to homeowners who take care of them. They also help in channelling the positive energy. You can give them to your friends and are a great way to wish them luck and prosperity. According to Vastu, and Feng Shui, these plants grow best when placed in the southeast corner of your home.

Money Plants aren't just an excellent air purifier but they also tolerate less than ideal indoor conditions. It is essential to keep track of the plant's needs for watering and fertilizing regularly. If the leaves are turning yellow, it could be a sign that the soil is not draining properly or that the plant is being overwatered.

Money Plants are distinguished by their green leaves, long stems, and tips which are light brown. It's a low-maintenance indoor plant that doesn't require much sunlight or fertilizer.
