What's The Point Of Nobody Caring About Exotic House Plants
5 Exotic House Plants to Add a Taste of the Tropics to Your Home

Bring a taste of the tropics into your home with exotic house plants. Orchids are fantastic exotic houseplants because they thrive in warm temperatures and moderate humidity, which is typical of most indoor environments.

The tropical foliage of the monstera deliciosa is also known as hole leaf monstera, adds an exotic touch to any room. Another option that is exotic is the bird of paradise with its distinctive, slender orange or blue flowers.

Monstera

Monstera deliciosa or Swiss Cheese Plant is a unique houseplant with large leaves. It provides an exotic look to your home. It is a climber and can be trained to hang from poles that are covered with moss, to resemble the trees found in its native habitat of Central and Mexico America. However, it also performs well in a pot and can be placed on the edge of a table or any other surface.

This tropical plant is easy-to-grow and has a distinctive appearance. It needs direct, bright sunlight and well-draining ground. It is also tolerant of low levels of humidity however, it will be most effective with higher ones.

This plant is named for the holes and splits that it displays on its leaf. These are called fenestrations, and they appear when the plant matures. It is a member of the Araceae family, as well as Pothos, Philodendrons, ZZ plants, and a myriad of other popular foliage plants for your home.

Like other aroids Monstera is fairly forgiving in its growth and can be grown in both outdoor and indoor plant. It can even be grown in dappled shade, which is typical of its forest understory habitat.

The flowers of the plant look like an ear of ear corn. It produces a delicious fruit, that has been described as a mixture of pineapple and banana. They can be consumed raw or cooked. The fruit of this plant can have the ability to lax which is why it is essential to use moderation.

One thing that differentiates this tropical plant from other species of plants is its ability to stand up to cold temperatures. Many other aroids melt in extremely cold temperatures However, Monsteras can withstand cold temperatures and thrive.

Monstera like other aroids, require a moderate amount of water. Only water when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Be sure to let any excess water drain from the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot after you water. Like many tropical houseplants, Monstera also requires a balanced liquid fertiliser. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of a balanced 20-20-20 liquid plant food into one gallon of water, and use it to feed your plant every couple of weeks during the growing season.

Begonia

Begonias provide a splash of color to flower pots, window boxes and garden beds. They are simple to grow and are tropical treasures. There are begonias available in vibrant colors and shapes that suit your style, whether you choose single- or double-flowered varieties. Contrary to other exotic house plants begonias bloom continuously throughout the season, and require minimal attention beyond a couple of times a month watering.

More than 2,000 plant species belong to the genus Begonia, with the majority of them sporting vibrant flowers and leaves. The majority of them are native to the tropics, but some can be grown in cooler climates.

Tuberous begonias such as the fad "Non-Stop" series are perfect for shady areas and outdoor containers. These frost-sensitive plants develop from round, solid or oval tubers, with either an upright or slender growth habit (for planters and flower boxes) or cascading tendencies (for hanging baskets). They require sunlight and shade to grow well. However, they won't flower in very dense shade or in areas that receive direct, hot sunlight. Wax begonias can tolerate full sun but can quickly burn in hot weather.

Most begonias do not need deadheading, but they may benefit from autumn and spring pruning to encourage new growth. They also thrive when planted in loose, rich soil. This could be a mix of organic material or a light loamy mix with slow-release fertilizer.

If you want to propagate begonias in a shallow tray place the tubers, with the hollow side about 6 to 8 inches apart, in a moist potting mix. Keep the mix moist but not soggy, and put the tray in a dark area. After about four weeks, they will begin to sprout. When they reach an inch tall they can be moved to a brightly lit space. Wait until there is no chance of frost before putting them in the ground. You can also start begonias from seed or by planting begonia transplants made of wax. They can be bought at greenhouses and garden centers.

Anthurium

Anthuriums also referred to as tail flowers and flamingo flowers, add a tropical touch to brightly lit rooms. It's easy to care for and the latest cultivars can produce flowers all year round. Anthuriums, which were originally epiphytes that grow on the surface of plants or in the air as well are durable and hardy house plants.

The anthurium's "flower" is actually a spathe, a protective sheath which covers a tiny, real flower within. The flowers last a few weeks and come in colors like pink, orange-red or white. The vibrant anthurium is a favorite as a hostess present and is also used in wedding bouquets on Hawaiian and Pacific Islands.

Anthurium belongs to the large family of Araceae that includes more than 1,000 species of flowering plant. Some are well-known like the hibiscus, orchid and poinsettia. Some are not as well-known, like the tulip trees and the Arum palm.

Anthuriums can be grown from seeds but it can take up to 4 years before you see any flowers. You can achieve faster results by cutting anthuriums of mature plants. Look for an established anthurium that has compacted roots and appears ready to be divided. Make use of a dry, clean knife to cut off a small portion of the plant. Be careful not to damage the roots.

A freshly cut anthurium can be transplanted to a pot of slightly moist vermiculite. Place the cutting in a spot that is kept at 70F and receives indirect, bright light. If you need to mist the soil and plant frequently and run a humidity machine close to it. Give the anthurium regular fertilizer however, don't apply too much because it burns the roots.

Repot anthuriums at least every two years or when the root ball is too big for the pot. To reduce shock, select a pot that is 20 percent larger than the container it is currently in.

Spray diluted soap on the leaves of your anthurium, then wipe them with a damp cloth. This allows the plant to breathe and will restore its beautiful sheen. Anthuriums can be afflicted by spider mites, however a preventative pesticide can keep these tiny invaders at the horizon.

Coconut Palm

Coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera) grows in tropical climates around the world. It is cultivated to produce edible fruit. It is one of the most important and widespread agricultural plants in the tropics. It is believed to have originated somewhere in Indo-Malaya. The trunk's wood can be used to construct huts and bridges. The fibers of shells or husks are used to make ropes. The coconut is actually a drupe, and not a nut.

If the seeds make an audible sloshing noise when shaken they are ready to be planted. plants house are then placed on their sides with three eyes slightly angled upwards and buried in soil to about half the thickness of the shell. Germination can take a long period of time, but can be accelerated by high temperatures and high humidity. After 6 months after which the roots and shoots are ready to be transplanted.

The plant is best designed for warm climates. It is tolerant of frost, but should not be exposed to temperatures below freezing as it may be damaged. It needs plenty of sunlight, a shaded location and a well-drained sandy soil. Regular watering is necessary but the soil must not be flooded. Fertilizing is also important by using a fertilizer that has a high nitrogen content.

In spring season, this palm produces fragrant flowers that smell sweet on slightly branched stems which grow male and female coconuts. The flowers are protandrous and male flowers bloom before the females. The flowers are pollinated by the wind. After 4-6 years the tree will begin bearing fruits.

For indoor cultivation, it's recommended to plant this exotic houseplant in a large pot with a well-drained, rich soil. It is a fan of sun but will be tolerant of low light. Repot the plant as it grows in a container larger than its roots. It is vital to water thoroughly and feed the plant regularly with a liquid fertilizer. Coconut palms are generally pest-free. However, they can be affected by lethal yellowing. This disease is incurable and often causes the death of the plant.
