Common Houseplants For Warm Climates
Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be cultivated indoors. Indoors, several palms thrive, such as the robustly tolerant parlour and the graceful paradise palm.
The popular pothos and some kinds of philodendrons (like the crotons with variegated colors) have attractive foliage and are easy to cultivate. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant moisture. However, let the soil dry between waterings.
Aroids
The aroid family is vast and includes many of the most sought-after houseplants today. Monocotyledonous, a lot of species are prized more for their leaves than their flowers. They come in many shapes, sizes, and growth habits. common houseplants come in a variety of colors. They include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums and colocasia.
They thrive in indirect light that is moderate to bright. They can also tolerate lower light conditions such as an east-facing window (just make sure the sun isn't directly shining upon the leaves).
Most of these plants thrive best in moist, warm climates. Make sure you use a potting mix that has good drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering. Make sure you check the top 2 inches often. The excess water can cause them to droop, wilt, or develop dark brown soft patches.
Bromeliads
The bromeliad family have a special attribute that allows them to store water inside their leaves or in a cup at the bottom of the plant. They also release water when they need it through trichomes. They are one of the plants that are most drought-tolerant. However, they still benefit from misting periodically.
Certain varieties, such as the Guzmania or neoregelia are grown because of their beautiful leaves, which may include stripes, spots, or bands of color. Some species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea, produce spikes with vibrantly colored flowers.
Certain bromeliads can be used in the indoors all year long, while others are moved outside in the warmer months (where temperatures are above freezing). In the Hidden Jungle garden at the Safari Park, we can observe bromeliads. The family Guzmania includes a variety of tropical plants which include the pineapple (Ananas comosus) that was introduced to Europe after Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.
Cacti
Cacti are a very popular choice for many people to add to their homes. These unique plants are designed to desert conditions, and most species have spiney stems. Many of them produce flowers and fruit. The spines serve a function they are able to stop herbivores from eating the leaves and fruits.
Cacti, along with other desert-adapted plants, can store water in the stems and roots of their plants during periods of drought. They can also store carbon dioxide in their stomata at the time of the day, and release it when photosynthesis takes place.
In common houseplant and South America, some cacti like the cholla and the prickly-pear (Opuntia) are used to build living fences. Some cacti, such as Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote) are utilized for their hallucinogenic effects.
Ferns
Ferns are among the most popular home plants you'll find, even though they lack flowers or fruit. Despite their absence of fruit and flowers they are easy to cultivate. The key to success lies in a growing medium that mimics the forest floor. This should be rich in organic matter but also have perlite or coarse gravel, to ensure proper drainage.
The needs of a fern should determine how often it gets misted. They prefer the humidity in living rooms and family spaces, however if the fronds are turning brown or are dropping their leaves is a sign that the humidity is too low.
To avoid water logging or root rot, the soil needs to be evenly moist but not overly soggy. To test the fern's moisture, simply stick your finger in the soil. It should feel moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering as it can cause a yellowing of the fronds. Avoid direct contact with the sun and radiators since they can dry out the plant too quickly.
Begonias
Begonias are a great option to add color and life to your indoor space whether you put them in a decorative vase, a macrame basket, or even in a garden. They thrive when they are exposed to indirect, bright light but require a good amount of humidity.
Fibrous-rooted Begonias require little maintenance plants which are easy to care for. The 'Dragon Wing' variety is the most well-known and has blooms in pink, scarlet and yellow, all on green to dark-bronze foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' collection for a compact version. They can grow from 12 to 15 inches tall.
They are sold as floor plants that can grow up to 4' tall and have beautiful leaves with Polka dot patterns on the front and back. They require regular irrigation and a regular feeding with an organic fertilizer. Check the moisture level of the soil frequently since they are prone to wilt if the soil is too dried out. The begonias aren't fussy about the type of soil they prefer, but they will appreciate an easy-draining, light mixture like African violet pot soil or one that is specifically made for houseplants.
Palms
Palms can add a tropical ambiance to your home, and are frequently used in indoor gardens. They are easy to care for and can create an attractive focal point in any room. They are durable, but they can be killed by low temperatures. They are best kept in a garage during winter or protected inside the house.
Palm leaves are also referred to as palmate or pinnate and are V-shaped. The leaflets are joined together or overlapped for part or all of their length and are joined by a costa which is an extension of the petiole to the leaf blade.
common houseplant are harvested for their fruits and wood. They are also planted for shade in warm regions and as indoor plants when a tropical appearance is desired. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is planted as a plantation to produce coffee and for its edible fruit, whereas the tagua palm Phytelephas aequatorialis, is utilized to produce vegetable ivory and Rattan.
Schefflera
Scheffleras, also known as umbrella plants or octopus plants, are one of the most popular types of houseplants. They are easy to take care of and don't require any coddling.
While they can thrive in moderate light Scheffleras prefer bright indirect light. Exposure to direct sunlight could burn the leaves, and not enough light can cause the plant to become sluggish and floppy.
Regularly watering is essential but don't overwater. Overwatering could cause root rot. Use a container only slightly larger than the original pot when refilling. An oversize pot will result in soil staying moist for too many hours.
Watch out for pests such as aphids and spider mites. If you find any pests remove them by pinching them or treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like Neem oil. If the leaves begin to wilt, it's likely due to a lack of moisture or a temperature shock.
Polyscias
Polyscias is a native of the subtropical islands of the Pacific, literally means "lots" of shade. This plant fits that description perfectly. It is a stunning plant with a twisting stem and beautiful leaves. It is a wonderful plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves are utilized for their medicinal properties which include diuretic, an antitoxin, and to treat fever, colds, flu and coughs. The leaves possess anti-inflammatory properties, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Studies have also shown that they contain eight new saponins of oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).
Place your Polyscias in a sunny location that doesn't expose the foliage to direct sunlight, since they can be burned. Water the soil after it has dried, but do not overwater. This could cause root rot, and possibly leaf dropping. Fertilise your houseplant with a labeled feed every four waters in summer, but reduce feeding to every six in winter and in the autumn.
Philodendrons
Philodendrons can be easily grown, making them an excellent option for new and novice gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron hederaceum5 is quick-growing and tolerant of different lighting conditions, flourishing in hanging baskets or climbing up a trellis in frost-free zones and happily spreading its heart-shaped leaves on windows in the bedroom or at a desk sill indoors.
Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has an elliptical-shaped leaf in a dark brown purple shade. Its unique color highlights its sculptural form and is perfect for modern spaces that have minimalist furniture or decorated in black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons and place them in a sunny area with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can lead to slowing growth and a yellowing of leaf edges. Use diluted, lukewarm water to add plant food instead of directly putting the food into the soil. Watering the soil directly can cause shock to philodendrons and cause them to lose health.
