Watch Out: How Exotic House Plants Is Taking Over And What To Do About It
5 Exotic House Plants to Add a Taste of the Tropics to Your Home

These exotic houseplants will bring a touch of the tropics to your home. Orchids are excellent exotic houseplants since they thrive in warm temperatures with moderate humidity, which is typical of most indoor environments.

The tropical foliage, also referred to as hole-leaf gianta, gives any room an exotic look. Another option that is exotic is the bird of paradise flower with its slender, distinctive blue or orange flowers.

Monstera

Monstera deliciosa or Swiss Cheese Plant is a unique houseplant with large leaves. It gives an exotic feel to your home. It is a climber and can be trained to cling to the poles covered in moss to mimic the trees found in its native habitat of Mexico and Central America. However, it also performs well in pots and can be placed on the edge of a table or other surface.

Aside from its unique appearance Apart from its unique appearance, this tropical plant is also easy to cultivate. Just ensure it gets bright, indirect sunlight and a well-drained soil. It can also tolerate low levels of humidity however, it will be most effective when humidity levels are higher.

The plant's name is derived from the splits and holes it shows on its leaf. They are referred to as fenestrations and they appear as the plant grows. It is part of the Araceae family, as well as Pothos, Philodendrons, ZZ plants, and a myriad of other popular household foliage plants.

Monstera like other aroids, is an plant that can be grown indoors or out in the open. It can be cultivated in dappled shades, which is characteristic of its understory forest habitat.

The flowers of the plant appear like an ear of corn. It produces a delicious fruit, that has been described as a mixture of banana and pineapple. You can consume the fruits raw or cooked. It is important to note that the fruit of this plant could cause laxative effects which is why moderation is important.

One thing that distinguishes this tropical plant from other species of plants is its ability to tolerate cold temperatures. Monsteras is able to survive in frigid temperatures that would kill other aroids.

Monstera like all aroids requires a little watering. Only water when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Make sure that excess water drain away from the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot whenever you water. Also, like most tropical house plant s , Monstera requires a balanced liquid fertilizer. Dilute 1/2 teaspoon of a balanced 20-20-20 liquid plant food in a gallon of water and use it to feed your plant every couple of weeks during the growing season.

Begonia

Begonias are easy to cultivate tropical treasures which add a splash of color to window boxes as well as flower pots and garden beds. There are begonias available in vibrant designs and colors that fit your design, whether you opt for single- or double-flowered varieties. Begonias are an excellent alternative to other exotic houseplants since they bloom all the time during the growing season. They require no special care, besides watering every two weeks.

More than 2,000 species of plants belong to the genus Begonia, with the majority of them sporting vibrant flowers and leaves. They are mostly native to the tropics but some can be grown in cooler climates.

Tuberous begonias like the'Non-Stop' variety, which is popular, are a good choice for shady spots and outdoor containers. These begonias with frost tolerance develop from tubers that are oval or round and have a firm growing habit. To grow well they require bright light with a little shade. However, they won't flower in very shade or in areas that receive hot, direct sunlight. Wax begonias are tolerant of full sun, but will burn quickly in hot weather.

Most begonias do not require deadheading, but they can benefit from spring and fall pruning to stimulate new growth. They also thrive in rich, loose soil. This could be a mixture with organic material or a light loamy mix containing slow-release fertilizer.

If you are planning to grow begonias in a shallow tray, place the tubers, with the hollow side between 6 and 8 inches apart, in a moist potting mix. Keep the mix moist but not soaking, and place the tray in a dark area. They should sprout in about 4 weeks. They will then be moved to a spot that has bright light once they're about 1 inch tall. Wait until there is no chance of frost before planting outside. Alternately, you can plant begonias with seeds, or by planting begonias in wax. They are available at greenhouses and garden centers.

Anthurium

Anthurium, also called tail flower or flamingo flower, adds an exotic tropical addition to any brightly lit space. It's easy to take care of, and newer cultivars produce flowers throughout the year. It was originally an epiphyte plant that grows on the surface of other plants or even in the air, anthuriums are durable and long-lasting houseplants.

The "flower" of the anthurium actually is an actual spathe. The protective sheath protects a tiny flower inside. The flowers are available in pink, orange-red, or white, and last for some weeks. The vibrant anthurium flower is popular as wedding bouquets and hostess gifts in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.

Anthurium is a part of the genus Araceae, which contains more than 1,000 species of flowering plants. Some are well-known, like the hibiscus and poinsettia. Others are not as well-known, such as the arum tree and tulip tree.

While it is possible to grow anthuriums from seeds, this could take up to four years before you see any flowers. To speed up the process, you can propagate anthuriums by cutting them off of mature plants. Find an established anthurium with compacted roots and appears ready to be divided. Use a clean, dry knife to cut off a portion of the plant. Be common house plants not to damage the roots.

Anthurium freshly cut can be transferred to a pot of slightly damp vermiculite. Place the cuttings in an area that receives bright indirect light and remains at 70F. Mist the plant and soil frequently, and run a humidifier near it to increase the humidity, if needed. Apply regular fertilizer to the anthurium but don't apply it too much since it burns the roots.

Repot anthuriums every couple of years or whenever the root ball gets too large for the container. To minimize shock, choose the pot that is 20% larger than the container it is currently in.

Spray diluted soap onto the leaves of your anthurium and wipe them dry with a damp cloth. This allows the plant to breathe and will restore its beautiful sheen. Anthuriums can be afflicted by spider mites, however a preventative pesticide can keep these tiny invaders at bay.

Coconut Palm

Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) is a tropical plant that is extensively grown all over the globe for its edible fruit. It is one the most important and widely spread agricultural plants of the tropics and likely originated somewhere in Indo-Malaya. The trunk's wood can be used to build bridges and huts. The fibres that are formed from husks or shells are used to make ropes. The coconut is a drupe, not an actual nuts.

It is recommended to propagate this plant from seeds that are ready for planting when they emit an audible sloshing sound upon shaking. The seeds should be placed on their sides, with the eyes slightly upwards, and then placed in the soil approximately half the thickness of the hardshell. Germination can take a long time, but can be increased by high temperatures and humidities. After six months the shoots and roots are ready to be transplanted.

The plant thrives in warmer climates and is not afraid of frost, however it should not be exposed to extreme cold temperatures because the plant may be damaged. It requires plenty of sun as well as a protected location and a well-drained soil. Watering is required regularly however it should be kept moist, but not drained of water. Fertilizing is also vital by using a fertilizer that has the highest nitrogen content.

The palm produces fragrant flower stalks in the spring. Female and male coconuts are able to grow from these stalks. The flowers are fragrant, and male flowers generally open earlier than females do so. The breeze pollinates the flowers. After about 4-6 years, the tree will begin to bear fruit.

Indoors, it's best to grow the exotic houseplant in pots large enough to hold rich, draining soil. It likes a sunny location but will tolerate low light. As it grows, you can repot the plant using a pot which is larger than its root ball. It is essential to ensure that the plant is properly watered and feed it with liquid fertilizer regularly. The Coconut Palm is generally pest-free however it is affected by a disease referred to as lethal yellowing, which there is no cure and that can kill the plant.
