We asked plant pros to share their favorite typical house plant s ranging from modern-day favorites to tried-and-true classics. So grab your watering can and get reading for some ideas for greenery!

Peace Lily

The plant is known as Cobra Plant or Peace Lily. (Spathiphyllum wallisii) It was the most searched plant in many online furniture-related websites in 2023. It's not a surprise given the plant's elegance and air-purifying capabilities.

Peace Lilies have been a popular houseplant for a number of years. They are easy to take care of and look beautiful. The white flowers (which technically aren't real flowers, but bracts) bloom in spring and fade in autumn. However, a few spritzes of water and you'll be rewarded with blooms in the autumn.

They prefer a warm, humid environment with temperatures between 68-85F during the day and dropping by 10 degrees at night. They flourish when the soil is moist but not sloppy, with light filtered indoor lighting. Avoid direct sunlight as it could cause burning to the leaves. Make sure to water frequently, but make sure the soil doesn't dry out completely, which could lead to root rot.

If your peace lily starts to look yellow, you're probably overwatering. If you're not sure of the frequency to water, a general rule of thumb is to water it when the soil's top inch begins to feel dry. When you water, make sure to use distilled or filtered water to keep the chlorine down.

Browning leaf tips is another common problem with peace lilies. This can be caused by sunburn, but it is more likely to be the result of a high dose of fertilizer. To remedy it, water the soil until the water is able to drain out of the drainage holes. Then, stop fertilizing for six months.

Many people mistakenly believe that their peace lily is dead when they see only green flowers. The reason for this is that if the plant was fertilized for flowering it could have been given too much nitrogen, which inhibits the plant's ability to grow flowers. To fix this issue, switch to a fertilizer lower in nitrogen and more in phosphorous. Also relocate your peace lily into a brighter place to encourage blooms. If best house plants doesn't work you could try a different variety of peace lily or a different type of fertilizer.

Spider Plant

Spider plants are very popular because they're easy to cultivate and produce lots of young "spiderettes" on their ends. When mature, these can be detached and rooted to create new plants (known as "Spider Plants"). This makes the Spider Plant a great choice for first-time houseplant owners, since it's extremely sturdy and can withstand a small amount of neglect.

The original Spider Plant, Chlorophytum comosum is a perennial grassy plant with long leaves in a variety colors including yellow and stripes. It produces tiny white plantlets that can be cut back and planted. The long, stiff stems of this plant can make a beautiful display when placed in hanging baskets.

The Spider Plant, like the Peace Lily is a versatile and adaptable plant that is able to thrive in all lighting conditions. However, it requires bright indirect sunlight to keep its variegated leaves in good condition. Avoid direct sunlight as the variegated Spider Plant will burn. It's also essential to keep the soil moist, but not too wet. It should be just wet enough for water droplets to fall off the leaves and fall into the bottom of the pot.

You can prevent soggy soil by using a smaller pot and the potting mix. You can even make it yourself. Another thing to be aware of is that Spider Plants respond well to basic, all-purpose fertilizer. However you should not over-feed them since this can cause salt accumulation in the soil.

The Spider Plant purifies the air inside your home by getting rid of indoor pollutants, such as formaldehyde. Put best house plants in an area with plenty of sun so that it can absorb the chemicals and help them escape via its foliage. The plant can be used in conjunction with other plants to further improve the air quality inside your home. It has been shown to eliminate odors, such as cooking and smoke smells.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

Ficus Lyrata, also known as the fiddle leaf fig or Ficus Lyrata is the plant du moment because of its beautiful violin-shaped leaves. This tropical plant thrives in humid, warm environments. It's easy to see why people are attracted to it because it can grow large and add visual interest to any room.

This popular plant can be susceptible to fungi and mold. It's essential to keep a close watch on the plant to monitor for any of these issues, particularly if you're using old soil that has been in place for a number of years. Regularly changing the soil is also important to ensure that the plant stays healthy and reduce the chance of getting sick.

One of the most costly mistakes you could make with fiddle leaf figs is overwatering it. They're natives of rainforest-like habitats which is where they are used to a deluge of water followed by dry periods, so it is important to be careful with your watering and allow the soil to dry out completely between waters.

It's also important to keep the plants free from dirt and other particles, which can clog up the leaves and block photosynthesis. This can be accomplished by wiping the leaves down with a damp cloth each week. This will help keep the health of the plant and also keep pests away, too.

There are a handful of serious issues that can happen to a fiddle-leaf fruit, apart from mildew and fungus. However, it's important to check the plant for signs of scale insects and other pests that are common to houseplants, such as aphids and mealy bugs. You should also keep an eye out for thrips which can cause yellowing of the leaves.

It's also a good idea to occasionally mist the fiddle leaf figs with spray bottles to increase the humidity in your home. This will be particularly helpful in winter when indoor air tends to be drier. It is recommended to mist your plant early in the morning to allow it to have time to evaporate.

Dracaena

Dracaenas thrive in a variety of indoor settings. They are low-maintenance and slow-growing, and some varieties like 'Lemon Lime dracaena' offer bright colors that can brighten areas that are shaded within the home.

The spiky, lanced leaves of the dracaena appear in a variety of shades and patterns, giving it a unique look that is both modern and rustic simultaneously. Some dracaenas are solid forest green, while others feature yellow, red, or white stripes. The leaves also curve slightly to give it a tree-like appearance.

Like many tropical plants dracaenas thrive in indirect sunlight and are tolerant of a shaded environment. Be common house plants that a lack of sunlight may cause loss or change of other characteristics.

When caring for dracaenas avoid over-watering the plant as this can lead to root rot and other issues. The soil must be allowed to dry completely before re-watering. If you notice that your plant is wilting or wilting, move it into an area that is more sunny or mist the leaves with plain tap water to add moisture to the air.

Pests are not a major issue for the dracaenas. However it is essential to inspect the plants regularly to ensure they are healthy. Aphids are insect with no wings that can take the juices out of the buds, stems, and leaves of the dracaenas. This can slow their growth and reduces vigor.

There are also scale insects and mealybugs, that are covered with cottony materials. If left unchecked they can choke the plant by sucking sap from its leaves.

Propagation of dracaenas is easy and simple via cuttings from the tip that can be taken year round. To start new plants, cut a tip 8cm in length and above a node of the parent plant. Place the tip in the jar and place it on a window sill and keep the water clean. After a few weeks, roots should be growing and you can plant the plant in fresh soil that is draining.

Dracaenas are sensitive to fluoride, which is why it is crucial to only use non-fluoridated water when watering your dracaenas. It is also a great idea to fertilize your plants with the name-brand 'Houseplant feed' every four waterings in the spring and summer. This frequency can be reduced slightly in winter and autumn.
