How Potted House Plants Improve the Quality of Air
Bringing potted house plants into the home can improve the quality of the air. Snake plants and Mother-inlaw's tongue, for instance, can help reduce indoor ozone and also eliminate VOCs that trigger allergies and asthma.
If your houseplant looks stressed or shows signs of being too large for its pot It's time to pot it. Choose a larger pot and add a new potting mix.
Boston Fern
Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is a favored houseplant with lush green fronds that add an exotic touch to any room. These plants are famous for their purifying properties in air which reduce pollution levels and increasing the humidity in homes. They are therefore a fantastic addition to bedrooms, where they can improve the quality of sleep and help reduce symptoms of allergies.
This plant requires indirect light and moderate temperature. It does not like to be exposed to direct sunlight cold, drafts or cold. Regular misting is recommended to boost the ambient humidity level particularly in less humid climates. It doesn't require much pruning or fertilization, but the fronds can turn brown and dry in the event that the plant is overwatered or is kept in a dry climate.
This plant grows in forests in moist, slightly acidic soil, in shaded areas. It is not tolerant of extreme heat or cold but is hardy between USDA plant zones 9 and 11. It thrives in humid environments and would benefit from being placed near a bathroom or kitchen.
This is among the easiest to care for potted ferns. Repotting is only needed when the roots start to extend around the base of the container. Repotting should be carried out in the springtime and the old potting mix could be used to fertilize the fern (use a weak solution of sodium Nitrate or Clay's Fertilizer). This plant is considered to be low-maintenance because it does not grow fast and is not susceptible to a variety of diseases or pests.
Ponytail Palm
The ponytail palm, also known as elephant's feet plant or bottle palm, grows in bunches of ribbon-like green leaves that resemble the shape of a ponytail. It is among the easiest plants to care for, as its swelling stem holds water. It can go for months without watering. It is a great choice for those who have children or pets, as it isn't toxic to either.
low maintenance house plants thrive in bright light however they can tolerate moderate light levels too. They should be kept in a well-draining pot that has dry soil. Repot only when the roots begin to encircle the pot but do not overcrowd them.
Allow the soil to drain completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause stem rot and yellowing of the leaves.
The palms of ponytails are vulnerable to pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. These pests can be controlled with soaps and oils for horticulture. They may also cause fungal and stem rots.
Areca Palm
Areca palms are easily maintained if there plenty of sunlight. These plants can be grown both indoors and outdoors in warm temperatures, but must maintain a healthy humidity. Brown or yellowed leaves and tips could indicate that your plant requires more moisture.
Water your areca palm only when the top inch of your palm feels dry. Do not allow the compost to become waterlogged. It is best to use rainwater or distilled to water your plants, because they are sensitive to fluoride.
Repot your palm every two to three year or when you feel the roots are overcrowded. It will also remove any fertilizer salt deposits that build up within the container and limit the growth of the plant.
Areca palms purify air by absorbing toxic gases. According to NASA's Clean Air Study these plants are efficient in removing toluene as well as formaldehyde. These are toxins that can be released from paints and solvents, dyes and solvents as well as from exhausts from vehicles, wood smoke, paraffin burning stoves and more. Inhaling these gases can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness and even liver damage when in high doses. The palm of Areca can be used to lower toxic gases in the home and office.
Dragon Tree
Dragon trees (Dracaena marginata) are stunning as a stand-alone plants or when combined with shrubby and trailing plants in an indoor plant stand. They are one of the few tropical house plants that can stand up to different levels of light and temperatures. They can even survive dry indoor air and low humidity, which would kill many other plants. Make sure to stay clear of overwatering, which could lead to root and stem rot.
A slow-growing exotic The Dragon plant's slender stem is enhanced by a crown of sword-like leaves, with red edging. This plant is perfect to fill in small spaces. These houseplants are easy to take care of. They thrive in average conditions in the house, and can tolerate dry indoor air and low levels of light that can be deadly to other plants.
Repot only when the roots are crowded. This can be determined by their growth rate and color, with little to no new root growth over a time being the most obvious indication.
It's completely normal for your Dracaena to shed dead leaves as it grows and ages. It is also beneficial to clean the plant by trimming the long, straggly stems with an sterile pair of pruning shears. Before using the shears, sterilize them using an abrasive which has been soaked in hydrogen or rubbing alcohol. This plant, along with other members of the same family contain saponins that can be moderately toxic for cats if consumed. Poisoning symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and crying. They can also cause weakness, a higher heart rate and a decrease in appetite.
ZZ Plant
ZZ plants are among the most popular house plants. They are frequently seen in offices and homes since they are easy to care for and attractive. They also help keep the air in the indoors fresh. They are a great option for rooms that may be too small for other plants. They grow slowly and reach an average size of 2 to 3 feet. Their dark green shiny leaves reflect sunlight and light up a room. They bring a tropical ambiance to rooms and are also a key element of Feng Shui.
These plants will thrive in indirect light that is medium to bright but can also tolerate lower levels of lighting. They are relatively resistant to dry air and low humidity and it's not required to mist the leaves or soil. The plant may have to be repotted if the plant begins to wilt. To keep the plant healthy it is vital to remove any yellow or brown stems and leaves.
Like most houseplants like most houseplants, the ZZ plant is susceptible to root rot if it is overwatered. Water the plant when the soil's top feels dry. This happens typically every couple of weeks or so. They don't have to be fertilized as frequently as other plants. However, they may benefit from the application of foliar sprays of liquid plant food every now and again. If you observe any indications of pests or insects on the plants spraying them with a natural pesticide such as neem oil will help to keep them healthy.
Tillandsia
The Tillandsia (also known by the name Bromeliads), is a huge group of plants that has over 650 different species. There are so many to pick from that it's almost impossible to find one to fit your style of home. They are often popular in terrariums, and can be used as accents on wood, driftwood magnets, cork, and even magnets. They prefer warm, shady rooms with bright, indirect sunlight like the shade under the canopy of trees where they naturally flourish. After a few years of growth they start to bloom and this is a good indicator that you've taken care of it well but it's also the end of the plant's life since they only bloom once. The plant will then begin to lose its energy and eventually die. This is normal and a part of the growing process. When the flower spikes stop blooming, the mother plant will begin to produce offsets, or "pups. These can be removed and treated individually.
Most homeowners cultivate tillandsia indoors because they are simple to care for. They are epiphytes which means they do not have extensive roots. Instead they absorb water through their leaves. This makes them extremely prone to overwatering or rotting. A good rule of thumb is to mist them with room temperature, and filtered water at least one time every week, and more often if your home is very humid. If they appear dehydrated, their leaves will curl and shrivel.
