What's Holding Back From The Common Houseplants Industry?
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive outdoors can be planted indoors. Indoors, many palms thrive, including the robustly tolerant parlour as well as the graceful paradise palm.

The popular pothos and some varieties of philodendrons (like the crotons that have variegated) have attractive foliage and are easy to grow. Orchids need bright light and constant watering. However, let the soil dry slightly between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroid family is vast and includes a number of the most popular houseplants in the world today. Monocotyledonous plants are prized more for their leaves than for their flowers. They are available in a variety of shapes sizes, shapes, and habits. They also come in a variety of colors. They include monstera, philodendrons and anthuriums and colocasia.

These understory plants typically receive the sun's rays in a diffused manner, which is why they thrive in light indirect to moderate lighting in the home. They can also tolerate less-light conditions, such as windows facing north (just make sure the sun isn't directly shining on the leaves).

The majority of these plants thrive best in humid, warm climates. Use a potting mix with adequate drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering. Check the top two inches regularly. In excess watering, they can shrink, wilt, or form dark brown, thick, mushy patches.

Bromeliads

The bromeliad plants in the family have a unique characteristic that allows them to store water inside their leaves or in a cup at the bottom of the plant. They also release water when needed through trichomes. This makes them among the most drought-tolerant houseplants however, they still benefit from misting often.

Some, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are grown for their colorful foliage, which may include spots, stripes, or bands of color. Certain species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea, produce spikes with brightly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads are used in the indoors all year long While others are moved outside in the warmer months (where temperatures stay above freezing). At the Safari Park, we can see bromeliads thriving in our Hidden Jungle garden. The genus Guzmania includes a variety of tropical plants which include the pineapple (Ananas comosus) which was introduced to Europe after Columbus' second trip to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a popular choice for many to add to their homes. These special plants are adapted for desert conditions and a majority have spiny stems. Many produce flowers and fruits. The spines serve a function as they deter herbivores, which might otherwise eat leaves and fruits.

Like other desert-adapted plants cacti can store water in their roots and stems during periods of drought. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide during the day and release it through photosynthesis, which produces food for the plant.

Some cacti, such as the prickly pear (Opuntia) and the cholla are used as living fences in Central and South America. Certain cacti, like Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote) are used for their hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most common houseplant s you'll see despite the fact that they don't have flowers or fruit. Despite their lack of fruit and flowers they are easy to cultivate. The key to success is a well-draining growing medium that simulates the forest floor (rich in organic matter, but with coarse gravel or perlite to ensure proper drainage).

A fern's needs should determine how often it is misted. They like the humidity in living spaces and family rooms, however if the fronds are turning brown or are dropping their leaves is a sign that the humidity is not enough.

To prevent waterlogging or root rot, the soil must be evenly moistened but not soaking wet. To test the fern's moisture just stick your finger into the soil. It should feel moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering because this could cause a yellowing of the fronds. Beware of the sun and radiators since they dry out the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Whether you're displaying them in a decorative container, on a macrame hanging container or in the garden, begonias bring vibrant color to indoor spaces. They thrive in indirect, bright light and require a lot of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low maintenance plants which are easy to care for. The most well-known series is 'Dragon Wing, which has its scarlet, pink and yellow flowers on dark-bronze or a green foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' series for a compact version. They grow from 12 to 15 inches tall.

They are sold as floor plants that grow to 4' high and feature beautiful leaves with dots of polka dots on both the front and back. They require regular irrigation and a regular feeding with liquid fertilizer. They are susceptible to wilting when the soil is dry, so make sure you check the level of moisture regularly. The begonias don't have a preference for soil, but they'll benefit from a quick-draining and light mix like African Violet potting soil, or one designed specifically for houseplants.

Palms

Palms can bring an exotic touch to your home. They are frequently used as indoor plants. They need moderate maintenance and can become a focal point in any room. They are durable, but they can be destroyed by cold temperatures, which is why they should be placed in the garage or protected in the home during winter.

Palm leaves are also known as palmate or pinnate, and are shaped as a V. The leaflets overlap or are joined across their entire length. They are joined to a costa that extends from the petiole of the leaf blade.

Many species of palms are harvested for their fruit and timber. They are also used for shade in warm regions and as indoor plants when a tropical appearance is desired. For instance, the peach palm (Brassica pendula) is grown for its edible fruit and as an ornamental crop for coffee, whereas the tagua or ivory palm (Phytelephas aequatorialis) is used to create vegetable ivory and rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, commonly known as umbrella plants or octopus plants, are one of the most common types of houseplants. They are easy to cultivate and don't require much - or any - coddling.

Scheffleras can thrive in light-medium conditions however they thrive in indirect, bright light. Exposure to direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Lack of light can cause the plant to become stiff and floppy.

Regularly watering is essential but don't overwater. Overwatering can cause root rot. When repotting, make sure to use the container that is only a little larger than the pot that was originally used; an oversized pot will result in too much soil that remains wet for too long.

Be aware of pests such as aphids and spider mites. If you spot pests, pinch them off or treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like neem oil. If you notice that your leaves are turning brown the leaves, it could be due to an absence of moisture or a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias is a native of the subtropical islands of the Pacific literally means "lots" of shade. This plant perfectly fits that description. It is a stunning plant with a twisting stem and beautiful leaves. It is a great plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves are used for their medicinal properties such as diuretic, an antitoxin, and to treat colds, flu, fever and coughs. plants house have anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Studies have also revealed that they contain eight novel saponins derived from oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three known ones (polyacetylenes).

Situate your Polyscias in a sunny spot that does not present direct sunlight on the leaves, as this may scorch them. Water once the top couple of inches of soil dry and avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot or even leaf fall. Fertilise your houseplants with a product labelled "feed" every four waterings in the summer. Reduce the frequency of feeding to six waters in the winter and autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are among the easiest houseplants to grow which is why they are a popular choice for new or beginner gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron hederaceum5 is fast-growing and adaptable to different light conditions, thriving in hanging baskets or climbing up a trellis in areas that are frost-free and spreading its heart-shaped leaves on windows in the bedroom or at a desk sill inside.

Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has elliptical-shaped leaves with a dark brown-purple shade. Its distinctive color emphasizes its sculptural appearance and is ideal for modern rooms with sleek furnishings or those decorated with black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons and place them in a bright area with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can cause slow growth and yellowing of leaf edges. Use lukewarm, diluted water to feed the plant instead of directly into the soil. Indirectly watering into the soil may shock the philodendron and lead to an increase in health.
