15 Bizarre Hobbies That'll Make You More Effective At Common Houseplants
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be cultivated indoors. Several palms, including the sturdily tolerant parlour palm and the beautiful paradise palm, thrive indoors.

The popular pothos and certain types of philodendrons (like the variegated crotons) have attractive foliage and are easy to cultivate. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant moisture, however, allow the soil to dry slightly between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroids are a huge family that includes many of the most sought-after plants in our homes today. Monocotyledonous plants are valued more for their leaves than their flowers. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and growth habits. They also come in a variety of colors. They include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums and colocasia.

They thrive in indirect light that is moderate to bright. They can even tolerate some less-light conditions, such as windows facing north (just ensure that the sun isn't directly shining onto the leaves).

Most of these plants thrive best in humid, warm climates. Make sure to use a potting mix that has adequate drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids can be sensitive to overwatering, so be sure to check the top two inches of soil frequently. They can lose their shape, wilt or develop dark brown mushily-colored spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

Bromeliad plants have a special feature that allows them to store water in their leaves or in a cup at the base of the plant. They also use trichomes to release the water when required. This makes them among the most drought-tolerant houseplant s but they could still benefit from being misted often.

Certain species, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are grown for their vibrant foliage which may include spots, stripes, or bands of color. Certain species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea produce spikes of brightly colored flowers.

Certain bromeliads can be used throughout the year indoors While others are relocated outside during warmer months (where temperatures stay above freezing). At the Safari Park, we see bromeliads in our Hidden Jungle garden. The genus Guzmania has a wide variety of tropical plants including the pineapple (Ananas comosus) which was introduced to Europe following Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Many people enjoy bringing the beauty of cacti to their homes. These unique plants are designed for desert conditions and the majority of species have spiney stems. Many produce flowers and fruits. The spines serve a purpose to deter herbivores that would otherwise eat the leaves and fruits.

Like other desert-adapted plants Cacti can store water in their roots and stems during drought periods. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide in the daytime and release it through photosynthesis, which produces food for the plant.

In Central and South America, some cacti such as the cholla and the prickly-pear (Opuntia), are used to create living fences. Certain cacti, including Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote), are used for their hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are the most common houseplants you'll see despite not having flowers or fruit. Despite the absence of fruit and flowers they are very easy to cultivate. The most important element to success lies in the growing medium that resembles the forest floor. It should be abundant in organic matter, but also have perlite or coarse gravel, to ensure proper drainage.

A fern's needs should determine the frequency with which it is misted. They enjoy the humidity of living spaces and family spaces, however if you find the fronds turning brown or dropping leaves, this could be a sign of low humidity.

To prevent waterlogging or root rot, the soil must be evenly moistened but not soaking wet. To test the fern's moisture, simply stick your finger in the soil. It should feel moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering, since this can cause yellowing on the fronds. Keep it away form the sun and radiators since they can dry out the plant too fast.

Begonias

Begonias are an excellent way to add color and life to your indoor space, whether you place them in a vase, a macrame basket, or in the garden. They thrive when they are exposed to indirect, bright light but require a good amount of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted bettonias, commonly categorized as bedding plants, are low-maintenance and easy to grow. The most popular variety is 'Dragon Wing which has its pink, scarlet and yellow flowers on dark-bronze or green foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' series for a compact version. They grow to 12 to 15 inch tall.

They are sold as floor plants that can grow up to 4 feet tall and have beautiful leaves with Polka dot patterns on the front and back. They require regular watering and a regular application of liquid fertilizer. They are susceptible to wilting if the soil is too dry, so be sure to check the moisture level regularly. The begonias aren't fussy about the kind of soil they prefer, however they will appreciate a light, fast-draining mix such as African violet potting soil or one specially designed for house plants.

Palms

Palms bring a tropical vibe to the home, and they are frequently utilized in indoor gardens. They require minimal maintenance and can be a focal point in any room. They are durable, but they can be damaged by cold temperatures, so they should be moved into an enclosed garage or in the home during winter.

Palm leaves are also referred to as palmate or pinnate and are shaped as a V. The leaflets are joined together or overlapped for part or all of their length. They are attached by a costa that is a extension of the petiole to the leaf blade.

A variety of palm species are harvested for their fruit and timber. Palms are planted as shade trees in warm climates, and indoor plants to give an exotic feel. For instance, the peach palm (Brassica pendula) is grown for its edible fruit as well as an agricultural crop for coffee, and the tagua, also known as ivory palm (Phytelephas aequatorialis) is used to make vegetable ivory and rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras are commonly called umbrella plants or octopus plant. They are among the most popular types of house plants. They are easy to grow and don't require a lot or any kind of coddling.

While they can thrive in moderate light Scheffleras prefer bright indirect light. Overexposure to direct sun can cause burns to the leaves. Lack of light can cause the plant to become leggy and floppy.

Water often, but be cautious not to overwater. Overwatering could cause root rot. When repotting, use small house plants that is only a little larger than the original pot. an oversized pot will result in too much soil that stays damp for too long.

Be small house plants of insects like aphids or spider mites. If you spot pests, pinch them off or treat the plants with an insecticide that is natural, such as Neem oil. If you notice that the leaves are turning brown the leaves, it could be due to a lack of moisture or a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias is a native of the subtropical islands of the Pacific is literally "lots" of shade. This plant is a perfect match for that description. It is a beautiful plant with a twisted stem and beautiful leaves. It is a great plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves contain medicinal properties and are utilized as a tonic diuretic, antitoxin and to treat coughs, fevers and colds. The plants also possess anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. Studies have also shown that they contain eight new saponins of oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place your Polyscias in a sunny location that does not expose the leaves to direct sunlight, as they can be burned. Water the soil when it has dried however, do not overwater. This could cause root rot and even leaf dropping. Fertilise using a houseplant that is labeled feed every four waters in summer months, but cut down to every six weeks in winter and in the autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons can be grown easily and they are a great option for novices and new gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron, hederaceum5, is fast-growing and adaptable to different light conditions, thriving as a hanging basket or climbing up a trellis outdoors in areas that are frost-free and spreading its heart-shaped leaves over a desk or bedroom window sill inside.

Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has elliptical-shaped leaves with a dark brown-purple shade. The unique color highlights its sculptural design and is ideal for modern spaces with sleek furniture or even those decorated in black. Make sure that philodendrons are placed in a spot that receives indirect sunlight, and avoid giving excessive water. Overwatering can result in the leaf edges to yellow and cause a slowdown in growth. Use diluted, lukewarm water to feed the plant instead of directly into the soil. Watering the soil directly can also shock philodendrons and cause them to lose health.
