Indisputable Proof Of The Need For Common Houseplants
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warm climates can be raised indoors. Several palms, including the robustly tolerant parlour palm and the graceful paradise palm, thrive indoors.

Pothos and some varieties (such as the Crotons that have variegated) are easy to cultivate and feature attractive foliage. Orchids need bright light and constant moisture. However, allow the soil to dry a bit between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroids are a large family that includes a lot of the most sought-after flowers that we see in our homes. Monocotyledonous, many species are prized more for their leaves than for their flowers. They are available in a variety of shapes sizes, shapes, and growth habits. They also come in a variety of colors. They include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums, and colocasia.

They thrive in indirect light that is moderate to bright. They can tolerate lower lighting conditions, like windows that face towards the north (just ensure that the sun doesn't directly shine on the leaves).

The majority of these plants thrive in warm, humid climates. Place them in a pot with a well-drained soil and a potting mix that offers good air circulation. Aroids can be susceptible to excessive watering, so be sure to check the top two inches of soil frequently. Overwatering can cause them to lose their shape, wilt or form dark brown, mushy patches.

Bromeliads

Bromeliad plants possess a unique feature that allows them store water in their leaves or a cup at the base of the plant. They also release water when needed using trichomes. This makes them among the most drought-tolerant houseplants, however, they still benefit from misting occasionally.

Certain species, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are cultivated for their vibrant foliage which can include spots, stripes or bands of color. Others, such as the Tillandsia and Vriesea species produce spikes of brightly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads are kept in the indoors all year long and others are moved outdoors in the warmer months (where temperatures remain above freezing). At the Safari Park, we see bromeliads growing in our Hidden Jungle garden. The Genus Guzmania includes a variety of tropical plants including the pineapple (Ananas comosus), which was introduced to Europe following Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a favorite option for a lot of people to add to their homes. These unique plants are designed for desert conditions and the majority of species have spiney stems. They also produce fruit and flowers. The spines serve a function as they deter herbivores, which would otherwise eat the leaves and fruits.

As with other desert-adapted species, Cacti can store water in their roots and stems for dry periods. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide throughout the day and release it during photosynthesis, which produces food for the plant.

Certain cacti, like the prickly pear (Opuntia) and the cholla, are used as living fences in Central and South America. Some cacti, such as Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote) are utilized for their hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most popular home plants you'll find despite the fact that they don't have flowers and fruit. They're nevertheless easy to cultivate. The key to success lies in an environment that replicates the forest floor. This should be abundant in organic matter, but also include perlite or coarse gravel, to ensure proper drainage.

A fern is best misted frequently based on its needs. They prefer the humidity in living rooms and family spaces, however if the fronds are turning brown or have their leaves falling off is a sign that the humidity is too low.

To prevent water logging or root rot, the soil must be evenly moistened but not soaking wet. To check a fern's moisture just stick your finger into the soil. It should feel moist, but not wet. Avoid overwatering because this could cause a yellowing of the fronds. Keep it away form sunlight and radiators as they will dry out the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Whether you're displaying them in a decorative pot, on a macrame hanging container or in a garden, begonias provide bright colour to indoor spaces. They thrive in indirect, bright light and require a lot of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias require little maintenance plants that are easy to grow. The most popular variety is 'Dragon Wing, which has its pink, scarlet and yellow blooms on dark-bronze or green foliage. For a compact version, try the 'Baby Wing' series that can grow to 12 to 15 inches tall.

They are sold as floor plants that grow to 4' high and have beautiful leaves that feature dots of polka dots on both the front and back. They require regular watering and a monthly application of liquid fertilizer. Be sure to check the moisture levels of the soil frequently since they are prone to wilt if the soil is dried out. The begonias do not have a preference for soil, however they'll benefit from a fast-draining and light mix like African Violet potting soil or one specifically designed for house plants.

Palms

Palms bring a tropical vibe to your house, and are frequently utilized in indoor gardens. They are easy to care for and can become a focal point in any room. They are hardy but can be killed by low temperatures. They are best kept in the garage in winter or in a protected area inside the home.

Palm leaves are also referred to as palmate or pinnate, and are shaped as a V. The leaflets overlap or are joined together across their entire length. They are joined to a costa that is an extension of the petiole of the leaf blade.

A variety of palm species are harvested for their fruits and timber. Palms are planted as shade trees in warmer climates, and indoor plants to give an exotic feel. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is used as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, while the tagua palm Phytelephas aequatorialis, is used to produce vegetable ivory and the rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras are also known as umbrella plants or octopus plants. They are among the most well-known types of house plants. They are easy to care for and don't need much or any attention.

Scheffleras can thrive in light-medium conditions however they thrive in indirect, bright light. Overexposure to direct sun can cause burns to the leaves. Lack of light can cause the plant to become weak and floppy.

Make sure you water your plants regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Overwatering can cause root rot. Use common house plant than the original pot when repotting. A larger pot could result in too much soil remaining moist for too long.

Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, scale insects and spider mites. If pests are detected, pinch them off or treat the plants with an insecticide that is natural, such as neem oil. If you notice that the leaves are wilting it could be due to an absence of moisture or temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias literally means 'lots of shade', which is the perfect description for this plant that was bred from subtropical islands in the Pacific. It is a beautiful plant with a twisted stem and beautiful leaves. It's a wonderful houseplant for creating a relaxing atmosphere. The leaves have medicinal properties and are utilized as a tonic diuretic, antitoxin, and to treat coughs, fevers and colds. They also have anti-inflammatory and antifungal activities. Studies have also found that they contain eight new oleanolic acid saponins (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).

Situate your Polyscias in a shaded area that does not expose direct sunlight to the leaves, since this could cause them to burn. Water the soil after it is dry but don't overwater it. This could lead to root rot and even leaf drop. Fertilise using a houseplant that is labeled feed every four waters in the summer months, but cut down to every six in winter and in the autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are among the easiest houseplants to grow, making them an ideal choice for novice or beginner gardeners. The classic trailing Philodendron hederaceum5 adjusts to varying light conditions and is able to grow quickly. It can be planted in hanging pots or trellis outside in frost-free areas or spread its heart-shaped foliage across a desk and bedroom window sill inside.

Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has leaves that are elliptical with a dark brown-purple shade. The unique color highlights its sculptural form and is ideal for modern rooms with sleek furniture or even decorated with black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons and place them in a spot with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can lead to the edges of the leaves to yellow and cause a slowdown in growth. Always use lukewarm water, and add plant food with a water-diluted solution as opposed to directly into the soil. Indirectly watering into the soil could shock the philodendron and cause an increase in health.
