Types of Heart Failure
Types of Heart Failure
There are two types of heart failure: systolic (when the heart contracts) and diastolic (when the heart doesn't contract). The problem occurs when your heart can't pump enough blood out to meet the body's needs. This condition is called congestive heart failure, also known as CHF.

In systolic heart failure, your heart can't squeeze out as much blood as it should during the left ventricle's systole (contractions) to pump oxygen-rich blood out into the body. This causes congestion or fluid buildup in your lungs, causing breathing problems and making it hard to exercise.

You're more likely to develop heart failure if you have certain medical conditions that damage your heart muscle. These include coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and other vascular diseases.

Your doctor will check your symptoms and other medical conditions to see if you have heart failure. Your doctor may recommend tests such as a blood test, a chest x-ray and an echocardiogram.

During the echocardiogram, your doctor can measure the amount of blood squeezed out of your left ventricle with each heartbeat, which is called your ejection fraction. Your doctor will tell you whether your ejection fraction is normal or low and help you decide the best treatment for you.

Personal Alarms for elderly Treatments for heart failure depend on the cause and how severe your symptoms are. They may include medication, lifestyle changes, physical therapy and sometimes heart surgery.

Depending on the cause of your heart failure, you may be given an implanted defibrillator, a device that will deliver controlled electric shocks to your heart if it beats too fast or too slowly. This can stop dangerous abnormal heart rhythms and improve your quality of life.
