One Of The Most Untrue Advices We've Ever Heard About Raised Garden Beds
Raised Garden Beds for Vegetables and Herbs

Raised garden beds are the perfect focal point in the garden. They are easy to maintain. The beds can be simple or spartan, or even elegant and ornate.

Set a stiff board across the span and use a level to check for the level of evenness from end to. Make adjustments as required.

Put homes gardens in the ground about 18 inches apart along the long sides.

Size

Garden beds raised are ideal for growing more herbs and vegetables in a limited space. They are less maintenance-intensive than in-ground plants, especially for those with back issues or other physical limitations. You can either build your own raised bed, or purchase an already-constructed kit from garden centers or home improvement shops. Some kits come with wooden frames that create an easy, but stylish addition to your garden or patio. Some are made of composite materials that resist insects and rot and require little maintenance.

Calculate the size of your raised bed by analyzing the space available and your requirements. For instance, if plan to plant root crops such as potatoes and carrots, you need to dig deeper than plants with shallow roots. For this reason, it is essential to plan for a minimum of 12 to 24 inches.

It is also crucial to take into account the width of raised beds. You will need enough space to work in the middle of the bed without stepping onto the plants. Raised beds shouldn't be wider than four feet. If you make it wider, you'll be unable to reach the middle of the bed to plant or harvest.

Once you've decided on the dimensions of your bed, you can begin building. To begin, lay out two new boards along the framing angle and mark them to drill. Take the boards off, and drill holes where you marked them. Attach the new boards using hex screws and washers, washers and nuts. Repeat the process with each board until the frame is completed.

If you intend to plant in a location which is prone to water runoff, you might need to find a way to divert that water away from the garden area or select a different spot altogether. The water that is accumulating in the garden will wick up into the soil, and then drown the roots in time, even if the raised beds keep the soil off the surface.

Some gardeners line their raised beds with a liner to help insulate soil, control weeds and keep pests such as snails and rabbits away. If you choose to do this, make sure that the liner is safe to come into contact with food items.

Materials

The most important thing to consider when building raised garden beds is the materials used to construct the beds. If you plan to plant edible plants, select a rot- and pest-resistant type of wood. It is also important to consider how the wood will be treated and whether it contains chemicals that can leach into the soil. Many older pressure-treated products were preserved using chromium copper acetate (CCA), a substance that contains arsenic. Because CCA can leach into surrounding soil and contaminate plants, this kind of lumber is not considered to be safe for gardening. According to the Oregon State University Extension, newer pressure-treated wood is usually preserved with Borates or ACQ (alkaline copper quatternary) Both of which are safe for gardening.

Wood pallets can be used to construct raised garden beds. However, avoid pallets with the letter "MB" since this refers to methylbromide, a pesticide that has a wide range of uses and is able to contaminate soil and water. It is also a chemical that reduces ozone levels, which can harm the environment and the health of humans.

Cedar and redwood are woods that resist rot and can be used to construct raised beds, but they are also more expensive than other kinds of lumber. If garden plant are on the tightest budget, you can choose pressure-treated wood, but place the inside of the raised beds with heavy plastic. This will prevent the absorption into the soil of the chemicals used to protect the wood.

Concrete blocks, cinder block and bricks are also options for garden beds that are raised. However, no research has been conducted regarding the safety of these materials for growing vegetables.

If you reside in an area that is prone to deer, rabbits or other burrowing, foraging animals which can ruin the garden within a matter of minutes, you should consider enclosing the beds with an imposing fence. You can choose to use three-foot tall corner posts encased in chicken wire all the way around, or frame a proper enclosure with the option of a door. If you do decide to enclose the beds, keep in mind that they must be left open enough so that pollinators like birds can reach their plants to forage for seeds and nectar. You can also apply a layer of 1/2'' or 1/4' hardware cloth at the bottom of the bed before adding soil, to keep animals from burrowing.

Drainage

Most plants and vegetables require lots of sun and well-draining soil. If starting a garden using raised beds for your garden, be sure to choose a location that gets at least eight hours of sunshine per day. If you live in a shaded region, you should choose a shade-loving vegetable and herbs like parsley, chives, and arugula.

When you construct your raised beds, fill them up with topsoil that is free-draining and of good quality. Avoid using treated wood with chemicals that will leach into your soil. Use cardboard or newspaper to line your raised bed. This will help to insulate soil and keep pests out and will also help to prevent weeds. To reduce time spent in the garden, make sure to keep your beds weed-free if don't cover them with.

Another way to improve drainage in your raised garden bed is to use the Hugelkultur method. It involves the construction of a mound made of organic material within the beds to increase the activity of microbial organisms and improve soil quality. Materials that work well include large decaying branches, sticks grass clippings and coffee grounds. The material will decompose and produce an abundant compost that can be added to beds.

Cover crops that are perennial plants that are cultivated to improve the health of the soil they can also aid in drainage problems in raised beds. Clover is a particularly good choice for this purpose because it has deep tap roots that break down the soil, and also add nutrients. Buckwheat, Rye, and Fava beans are other choices.

If you want to add a drainage improvements to your garden beds, consider using rock minerals such as limestone and gypsum. These materials help to regulate the pH of the soil, which promotes nutrient absorption and enhances water storage.

It's crucial to know how to test this. Too much moisture can cause the death of a raised bed. Use a level when you water your garden to check if the soil is evenly moist on the surface. If it's not, then water the beds less until it's.

Planting

There are a myriad of options for lining raised beds, including newspapers, cardboard, mulch, compost, shredded grass or leaves, concrete, and other materials. The best material for lining depends on what the bed is intended for and what growing conditions are like in your region. If you plan to grow vegetables that need plenty of water in a sloppy soil, you can use crushed gravel or crushed rock as the bottom layer. This will ensure a good drainage and keep the soil from settling too quickly.

A layer of organic material can also assist in keep soil cool, reduce weeds and keep the right soil temperature. It can also improve soil fertility, permitting plant roots to break down organic material and incorporate it into the soil. It is recommended that the mulch be applied after the soil has been planted to reduce the amount of weeds that sprout.

Because the area of planting is much smaller in raised beds that the plants are planted in a dense manner. This keeps the amount of weeds to a minimum, and allows the crops to grow with less watering. Additionally, the denseness of the plants means that any weeds that do crop up will be competing for space and nutrients, instead of for water and sun.

If the raised garden bed is located in an area that is susceptible to moles or other burrowing pests, it is recommended that you line the entire bottom of the bed with a piece 1/2" of hardware cloth before adding any soil. It can be stapled to the bottom of the frame or in some cases buried deeper into the ground.

Installing a "spannerboard" is also recommended. It is a small board, longer than the bed's height. This can be used to place buckets of water or other gardening tools on while weeding or tending the crops, and it makes an ideal seat to sit on while working in the garden. To lessen the need for herbicide, a weed barrier could be added on top of raised garden beds.
